Thanks RNGTR, that's a lot to think about. I'll certainly do all the usual cold start tests when I look at them and check for smoke. definitely won't be buying the first one I see that's for sure (unless its perfect).

Thanks for al lthe help guys

as others have said.. ditch the idea of a GT4 and go get a Mitsi VR4 or a RS liberty both are far better cars.
Hell even a Mazda Familia or Laser TX3 4wd will provide more fun and cheaper repair costs (although the Mazda/Ford have glass gearboxes)

If anyone from Brisbane knows the KFC/Subway, corner of something and Old Cleveland Roads in Carindale where you turn right to go down towards the Gateway motorway entrance there is a merge lane.

Sounds like you are going to be a GT4 regardless of the advice given.

For the record - heavy, ugly, poo.

not necessarily, as much as I'd love one I can't seem to get one definite opinion from any one group. It always ends up being 50-50. Both the other forums I've posted on, no doubt some of you are members of and have noticed, are pro GT-Four and this forum started out that way but has certainly changed tact in recent times.

From what I can gather they aren't too bad if you can find a good one, in that light, if I was looking at one I'd want one as stock as possible and not previously owned by anyone under the age of 97.

Another forum even said that VR-4's are far worse for reliability than the GT-4. I think it depends on the condition of the car and personal experience. I'm not locked in but I'm more certain than I was that I'll keep an eye out for one in good stock condition but until then I won't waste any money on an impulse buy.

                        I think it's the price issue though; a properly-priced VR4 is going to be in better condition than a properly-priced GT4, just 'cos the GT4 doesn't have a MrBishi badge & is a 2dr.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

I wired an Adaptronic in to a GT-Four on the weekend actually, it goes well for a low boost stock car.

Like others have said, they are a prick to work on in the engine.

Driving felt really nice, interiour was nice and it all was to a decient standard for a old car. I wouldn't mind one as a daily now either.

RS is the answer. Stay away from GT-4 and VR4-both are pigs.

I sold my 1-owner, clean and straight, 140K km MY00 WRX for $12K. I'd keep looking, but that's just me.

Id look for the Grp A model. The driveline is strong, i dunno who or why people said its weak. Its not that bad to work, in comparison to the SW20 anyways hehe, and yeah the only thing is its a bit heavy, but to todays standards 1400lg (i think) is ok? When done right they look sweet, such as this.
