We were looking at and drove the Touareg before we opted for the Pathfinder.

It only had 1/2 the engine of the one above however (2.5TDI 5cyl) but was also 1/2 the price at $64990.

I liked it, especially the interior quality (Shits on our Pathfinder), but no 7 seat option, extra $$ for leather, and Metallic paint swung the deal Nissans way.

BTW, you will find alot of (if not all) Modern Diesel engines are sluggish from a standing start, even a V10 touareg, its to do with the 'Euro 4' emissions, basically the one way manufacturers comply with Euro 4 is to 'drastically' cut the amount of Diesel injected into the motor as you take off, as this is the worst period for a Diesel engines emission wise (No plumes of Black smoke anymore).

It was really noticeable when our fleet of Isuzus gradually changed over to Euro 4 engines, the quoted HP figures were going up and up, but they felt slower, even my new Volkswagen Crafter hardly comes on Boost at all in 1st gear.

I know that the pajeros and prados are having issues with the chips on the newer models.

i recently drove a new exceed with the chip - went brilliantly although stalled at WOT apparently something to do with the emissions software or hardware - i dont pretend to have a clue.

sure can. Increases NM across the range plus removes alot of the initial sluggishness.

Well this is a bit of a bump from a year back!

R50 is where it is at indeed!

Lucky enough to get a ride in one on Saturday for a bit of fun. Now I've never been 4wding in my life, so this was a new experience.

The group we went out with are experienced in 4wding, so I left the off road judgement to them. We hit the powerline track up in Mundaring, about 40km east of Perth. Its well known and well used, and regarded as a decent challenge. Tyre pressures were dropped to 25psi, the air suspension was raised to its max and the centre diff lock was engaged. The ESP system worked a treat, several times on the harder stuff you could feel the car transferring load to the correct wheel, negates the need for front and rear diff locks. They were all impressed with how well the thing did, but all agreed that it needed real tyres to be a serious 4WD. Looking directly into the sky and being able to pat the road next to you was definitely an interesting experience!

On the road this thing hauls serious ass for a 2.7 tonne tank. I can only imagine this engine in something around the 1500kg mark. Massive brakes haul it up with ease (pretty sure they are 8 pot fronts) and it handles better then the stocker easily. Really well fitted out inside, but I did find the rear room a little cramped for someone of my size. My mate who took the pics is also quite tall and commented on the same thing.

As per what I wrote over a year ago, I'd have one as a daily no worries at all

Ill let the pics tell the story

yeh the R50's are cool as, have seen a few around brisbane.

wouldn't have expected them to be decent off road but all that torque must come in handy.

oh and I think they'd weigh more like 2500kg's not 1500kg's like you said

Hehe I said 2.7 tonne, just wish the motor was in something 1.5 tonne :D

The whole point of going off road was to see if it could actually do what it is sposed to, but yes getting back to Perth to realise you only get tyre goo and no spare could have ended in tears :D

The dash and paddle shifts are liftly directly from the Bentley range, you'd have to be devo that some filthy suburbanite has the same bits in his 130k shitter 4WD !

180km/h with the tyre pressure alarm on.... brilliant

tough truck though, very much one of those cars that says fuck off.

Micky, we let the pressures down at the start, then pumped them back up before we headed home.

Pressure warning stays on till you instruct the car to reset them - not stupid enough to do that sort of speed on under inflated tyres.
