I disagree. I think a lot of people who bought WRXs had no choice.

There was (and is) a very strong Mitsubishi GSR/Evo following. Arguably with the sucess Mitsubishi had with Tommi and winning so many Wold Rally Championships they could have grown their following. Just look at how many people went to the trouble of bringing in personal import Evos, did conversions and the rock solid used GSR values to see how much support there was. These people grew up but had no obvious car to buy. I think you'll find that the more sensible pricing of the 8s and 9s has won them a lot of new fans. Combined with the lack of obvious turbo competitors, you'd probably see the new GSR do just as well as the new WRX did when it had the market pretty much to itself. People overcame the low-rent interior (which arguably Mitsubishi has) and focused on the performance.

As long as it arrives with a proper gearbox (a manual, none of this paddle crap) I'd be keen. As edo says there may be rather a long disorderly line if it gets here.

Funny how you say that. I found the situation between the RS Liberty and Galant VR4 to be totally the reverse - the RS was so much better to drive as was the fit and finish etc. Hopefully Mitsubishi have improved heaps on the quality part of things.

What do you mean by the Subarus being pox - geabox and clutches aside?

I'd gotten all excited about buying a new GSR on a lease, after being in a workmate's new '94 WRX. I'd done the sums incorrectly though; these were the first guaranteed buy-back leases, and the marketing gumph made it sound like you were only paying interest on purchase-price-minus-RV, whereas in reality they were no different to leases prior except there was a guarantee that they'd buy the car for the balloon-price. Anyhoo, the upshot was it was craploads more exxy than I'd calculated, and I went used.

The used-market options were an RS, a VR4, and a GSR. VR4's had interiors which made a Calais look (& feel) good, and GSR's had interiors which made a Commode Exec look (& feel) good. Both VR4 & RS were faster than the GSR, but the VR4 just felt like it weighed a lot more; the GSR looked really really cheap & nasty though, they couldn't even get the plastic bumpers the same colour as the car unless it was white.
Compared to the GSR, the WRX was better-finished , more comfy, much quicker, felt more upmarket, and back then they even looked better (the plastic add-ons were pretty minimal). The interior was admittedly more base-model than Liberty or Galant, but the switchgear & controls felt less 1985 Nimbus than the Galant.

The reason the odd person has decided they're a MrBishi fan over Subaru is a backlash against the popularity of the Subaru, and because grey-imports are cheap if you (for no known reason) compare their prices to new cars. 'Twasn't due to comparing cars (GSR vs. WRX), though.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Thats one of your biggest piles of shit ever. I bought a GSR because it was so much better to drive, it was better balanced, had better steering...both were finished like the cheap models they were derived from. This is comparing new cars, when they were released not some fanciful crap about grey imports

You've just got wierd freakish tastes.
                    30% more performance > 5% better steering feel. :p

I like my '93 GSR, at the time I got it, around '97 or '98 I think, a WRX wasn't really in the running, from memory they were a shite load more expensive still and I preferred the look of the Lancer and i like the way it drives. Haven't driven a WRX though, don't think I ever will either now.

ce gsr should have been sold here,
                        cc, ce 1.5sohc should not.

You can fix power, you can fix brakes, you can fix suspension...but you cannot without huge $ fix steering or balance. Hence thats what I will always focus on.

But steering & paticluarly balance directly come from suspension; how can you know what's fixable, when the factory setting is "sloppy" like the GSR?

Definitely needs bigger wheels and lower suspension. And a different colour. Front doesn't look too bad, but there's something about the rear 3/4 shot, just looks, bland, Camry-esque even.
