Get your missus a bit of driver training stat! If she is as shit as you say and can't even steer an FWD safely, you'll be doing everyone a favour (especially her!)

You might want to make sure that, like many other clueless Subaru owners, she doesn't go around thinking that AWD = invincible in all road conditions and find that her driving actually becomes less safe...

Every time it rains heavily, most of the (non-performance-model) Subaru drivers around here don't seem to slow down - thinking that somehow, having AWD will do something to increase the level of tyre grip available (as opposed to giving you better power-down traction, which I do agree with). Another triumph for marketing...

Yeah, give her a Falcon on LPG. Single spinner might teach her a bit about car control, without being too nasty.

She's not dumb but she is a very poor steerer. That said, when I had my old sti she seemed a lot more competent in it than any other car. I'm not saying awd is a magic invincibility barrier, but more grip never hurts.

And yeah, I booked her into a advanced driving course yesterday though she doesn't know it yet.

I would think a FWD shopping trolley fitted with Michelin Precedas or Bridgestone Adrenalins would be far safer (roadholding) than a 8 yrs old Outback fitted with the obligatory dual purpose tyres.

How much are 2.4L mivec Lancer Wagons worth now?

believe me if I get one with dual purpose tyres they'll be off quick smart. we don't go offroad.

Stock Gav they are a bit shitty. With only pissing off the shit OEM tyres and adding a 22mm rear sway bar it changes it worlds over.

im a liberty man myself, only the 2.0 version but its great on fuel. Had it for 2 hyears since new and haven't had any problems with it. If you can stretch the budget a little for the new shape ones i'd be looking at them!

Yeah, but will she drive it with the foot buried, like you do?

More seriously though, they're not "terrible", but something like a Mazda6 wagon will be better, and I don't personally believe that the Outback would be any better in terms of roadholding (except when it's raining). In Shire driving type situations, Mum's 2.2 '98 Gen2 used [only a wee bit] more fuel than Dad's '05 Maxima (even though the Maxima felt like it had about double the herbs ).
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

outback is the same shit, looks higher and much more 4wdish than the XT

xt is one of my favourite cars out there..
with a few mods of course.
