Both engines are absolutely gutless, so why bother paying extra for the H6's fuel if you're not going to enjoy it.
I have heard that the newer 6s were a lot quicker, but you're talking a lot more money for those.
I didn't say the engine was frighteningly powerful, I said it was a much nicer engine. It has nowhere near the NVH levels of an EJ engine and that is noticeable when driving either car.
The 6 costs less to service because it has less serviceable items(timing belt, seals, tensioners, idlers etc) and it's fuel consumption is no more on the highway and buggerall more in town.
My opinion based on direct involvement with both cars and being a Subaru mechanic.

Fair enough mate. I'm by no means a mechanic, so I was just going off the few drives I've had in an H6 outback. I couldn't comment on the servicing side at all. It just really disappointed me performance wise, so I couldn't see the appeal. I went for a spin in one of the current shape 3.0s and it was MUCH better.
slight change of track, more curiosity than anything
anyone opinion on an audi a4 wagon vs outback?
the audi is 2-3yrs older for the same price
My gut-feel comfort-level thingy would have me in the Subaru, but the Audi is more interesting to me. I dunno if your missus has any real interest in cars, but the Audi should have an interior that looks & feels to be of higher quality, and that might interest her.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
What about an older Sti/WRX? Especially if she drove your old Sti well.

yeah i wouldnt mind a rex wagon but she parks is at the train station each day
anyway i have driven 4 outbacks now. the only decent one was manual so she doesn't want that (bloody women). The one I just drove then looked great, but when I drove it the auto did a bloody huge "thunk" going from 1st to 2nd. sigh.
The other 2 drove ok but had heaps of scratches interior & exterior. One had lots of overspray in engine bay presumably from a crash.
will look at more in a week or 2 when I get time
edit - the 2.5 is shockingly underpowered. floor it and the car barely moves I reckon my ss could reverse faster.
