Anyone else think that the "Doctor" was the least articulate "expert" they'd seen on one of these reports?

I'm guessing it would never happen because Mums and Dads could be swept up in a law that they so vigorously wanted introduced.

On the carpark gatherings, in the US a lot of organised motorsport is conducted in car parks, that driving through a course marked out with witch's hats thing is popular. But here there is bugger all of that sort of thing in carparks or other public spaces.

Instead we have the cops encouraged by the politicians targeting carpark gatherings and creating conflict. I wonder what the knock on effect of such conflict is, how much vandalism etc results from it? Its a bloody unhealthy social thing whatever.

On the governments defence how are they supposed to know that subsidising/encouraging legit events are going to make a big dent in hooning. Didnt they do that in a couple of U.S states and they found that it had little to no effect. As my stupid freind/aquaintance and his freinds would all say "yer but its the thrill of getting caught bro"... After explaining that a speeding fine is $200-1500 and Eastern Creek is $45. Idiots are always idiots.

PS im not against it, I would love cheaper and more accesible tracks like anyone else.

yeah but at the same time they have stopped numbers in those area's you still have to wonder where are the other 200 cars now ???

stopped driving cars or DRIVING SOMEWHERE ELSE, untill the police leave them alone ??

I'm sure I can remember a few years ago doing some silly things on the freeway that goes between brisbane and gold coast. There were cop cars there. On average between 10-20 marked and unmarked and over 400 "HOON'S". The police kept a watchful eye but never seamed to interject themselves, they would just ensure that there was not to much of a disturbance when the group met up or when they finished there drive.

i'm sure the reason we don't have more carpark style motorkhana, drift, parking competitions is due to insurance that would have to be paid which would then mean that entry fees would have to be paid and who is going to pay fees when you can just go to the next carpark for free !!

The point is that these sorts of events provide a legitimate gathering point, with something to do, participate or spectate, the latter costing nothing.

The following is a general rant

Whay are people so 'tolerant' of the effing Guvmint? There are facilities for other sorts of sporting and social events, why not this. Personally it has no impact on me whatsoever, I just think that the whole thing stinks.

But hey, typical selfish Aussie attitude, if it doesn't affect me why give a shit.

And I'm sure that the reason we don't have more events is because mostly people are too lazy to organise it (particularly when we're talking young "car enthusiasts") and when someone does a significant proportion of the target market are more interested in bitching about what is wrong with the event than getting involved.

I do agree that governments are seriously blurring the lines between road safety and behaviour that is simply annoying however the excuse that there aren't enough sanctioned events/facilities is just bullshit imo.

Take the Gold Coast and ask the Guvmint how much $ they provided for the new Titans NFL ground, just one example.

As far as organising something goes, the motor industry should do a lot more than they do, which is SFA unless it directly benefits them. Then you have CAMS which no gives a shit about grassroots and also does SFA. Unless its some elitist thing like the Driver to Europe program.

secoh, you may have read the article in Street Machine by Seddo that referred to my chapter on hoons and moral panics (ie the 0.5% figure). My blog's MySQL server is down at the moment but here is the direct link to a pdf of the chapter:

                      yeah, thanks Adrian Hodgson

I have a very bad stutter. What you see is me drawing on about 15 years of experience figuring out how to speak without stuttering and thinking at a rate many times faster than I am speaking so I can find the words to speak to express myself.

It is extremely difficult when I know precisely what it is I need to say, like the punchline to a joke or ordering a drink. Critiques abound regarding body image and what not, but not idealised conceptions of speaking. Most people don't know I stutter, they just think I'm 'inarticulate'. Indeed, I'll take your comment as a compliment.

TJ, that story is interesting to the extent that they don't explicitly make a connection between the 'hoons' and the road safety stats, but only imply a causal link. Stories like that should include a table of stats clearly indicating at least the correlation (causation is more difficult). If they don't include the stats and the hoon's are not causing fatalities or whatever, then they are not actually addressing the problem, ie the government is not doing its job, but only appearing as if it is doing its job.

out of all the academics i've met (and I've worked in the university environment) Dr. Hoon looked and sounded ok

i dunno if you were expecting someone without a ponytail and in a tweed jacket with leather patches for the elbows but we're talking about a fairly non mainstream kind of research here

I must say, your better than about 60% of university academics i've met, and I go to one.

Not every academic wears a tweed suit and has an pommy accent.

I swear that Glen Fuller dude is originally from Perth. Was part of SilviaWA. He did his thesis on hoons/car enthusiasts years ago then moved to the east coast to work for Street Machine Magazine or something. I remember him having long hair back then tho! Can anyone confirm?
