The price disparity between luxury cars sold in Australia, and luxury cars sold overseas was already rediculous - and now it's going to get worse!

Well you can buy a new 3-series in Europe for Commodore money. Is there something wrong with this?

no doubt, but the the original statement is still an exaggeration.. so you cant get a top shelf golf with all the fruit for less than 57k. thats a terrible tragedy but you still however can get a golf for under 30k.

Didnt someone create a poll before last years election?

Surely it wouldnt be too hard to name and shame those pf members who voted for more expensive cars and booze.

I searched for a thread but my google skillz dont extend to pf search.

The tax, up from 25 per cent to 33 per cent, is aimed at prestige imported cars.
But the rise will affect locally produced vehicles such as the Ford Territory Ghia and the Toyota Tarago Ultima.
                      Nailed it !
The govt is claiming they are hitting the rich,
whilst they are actually taking the bulk from the middle class Australian....

They will drag more $$$$ from people buying $57k - $100k cars [middle market] than it will from the top end.

hate to support the other side here, but does the fact they sell eleventy bilion M3s in the states each year and 3 here make much difference? all cars are cheap in the USA compared to here, but so is petrol and so on.

I'm with Jizzmonkey on this one. If you can't get a decent family car for under 57K there is a problem. EG, ST-L pathfinder, $50K on road with 7 seats and there is plenty of other examples.

As a general comment I do agree the limit is a little low and I reckon around 65K onwards is closer to the mark but I don't really care either way.

The raising of the luxury car taxes is hardly a 'big' issue, seriously. Oh Noes I now can't afford my HSV or FPV. Whatever will I do............

PS. I voted labour and I'm still happy with my decision. Labour will continue to have to make tough decisions regarding the budget and the economy to deal with the legacy left by Howard & Costello.
                              RB26......................Again
