The poor are people and the rich people are cunts?

The argument over rich vs poor reminded me of the story below, sure its got an American theme to it, but the premis and the message is the same.

Over lunch two friends were discussing the government's recent round of tax cuts: - "I'm opposed to those tax cuts," the retired college instructor declared, "because they benefit the rich. The rich get much more money back than ordinary taxpayers like you and me and that's not fair." "But the rich pay more in the first place," the businessman argued, "so it stands to reason that they'd get more money back." He could tell that his friend was unimpressed by this meager argument. Even college instructors are a prisoner of the myth that the "rich" somehow get a free ride in America. Nothing could be further from the truth. Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand.

Suppose that every day ten men go to a restaurant for dinner. The bill for all ten comes to $100. If it was paid the way we pay our taxes, the first four men would pay nothing; the fifth would pay $1; the sixth would pay $3; the seventh $7; the eighth $12; the ninth $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement until the owner threw them a curve. 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 1 + 3 + 7 + 12 + 18 + 59 = 100 cost of dinner "Since you're all such good customers, he said, I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20." Now dinner for the 10 only costs $80. The first four are unaffected; they still eat for free. Can you figure out how to divvy up the $20 savings among the remaining six so that everyone gets his fair share? The men realize that $20 divided by 6 is $3.33, but if they subtract that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would end up being paid to eat their meal.

The restaurant owner proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay under the same assumptions: Now the fifth man also paid nothing, the sixth pitched in $2, the seventh paid $5, the eighth paid $9, and the ninth paid $12 leaving the tenth man with a bill of $52 instead of $59. Outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. "I only got a dollar out the $20," complained the sixth man, pointing to the tenth, "and he got 7!" 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 2 + 5 + 9 + 12 + 52 = 80 reduced cost of dinner "Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got seven times more than me!" 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + (-1) + (-1) + (-2) + (-3) + (-6) + (-7)= (-20) savings on dinner "That's true," shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $7 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!" "Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor." The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night he didn't show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They were $52 short! And that, boys, girls, and college instructors, is how America's tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up at the table any more.

Now $77k is definitely a luxo car.

That means if they were to raise the percentage by whatthefuckever, it might actually hit luxo cars, and not guys like me, whose specced up XR8 hit $58k - like it did 4 years ago. And I know it might be hard to believe, but in NSW where the registered road fleet is getting younger by the day, the percentage of cars in that price range would be above the 10% as claimed by the greedy fucking goverment - you can tell that by just driving though Sydney on a sunday.

      in 2000 a Fairmont Ghia was $46490.
      in 2008 a BFII Ghia is $47990.

its quite difficult to find a car in 2000 which was cheaper than now.

apart from the fact there is no GST on those two items, the reality is that the family on 200k is going to be spending more on GST'able items and non-staples than the family scraping through on 50k, therefore surely the higher income family is going to be paying more GST.....

as for whoever whinged that people earning more hire accountants and whatever to reduce their tax, surely as long as what they are doing is legal, then there's no problem with that..... Sure there are loopholes, but anyone who doesn't take advantage of them is stupid, and they are failing of the system, not the people taking advantage of them.

While I agree the LCT and alcopop tax are non-issues in the broad economic picture, there are plenty of reasons to believe the sky is falling. The biggest one IMO is Rudd's stated goal of 60% CO2 reductions by 2050. How do you suppose he's going to acheive this without taxing the shit out of petrol, diesel, gas, electricity, and anything else we do which has a carbon footprint (ie everything)?

The other point to consider is that it's Labor, and history tells us a good deal about what to expect WRT economic policy. Buckle your seatbelts kids.

which brings up another pet hate of mine. In the midst of talking about getting co2 emissions down, he's screaming about the price of petrol. Surely that's a massive conflict, since driving the price of fuel down is just going to increase car usage....

I know it's not that simple, since fuel prices have an avalanche effect on other prices, but you get my drift.

Ive read this before, too bad its a rediculously simplistic story which doesnt take into account real-world factors such as tax-minimisation strategies which work better the greater your income, for example.

Fossil fuels will disappear of their own accord when we have a better alternative. That won't stop Rudd taxing us to the shithouse in the meantime though.

Yes I know the budget hasn't been released yet, but I'll put money on it, there's some pain coming.

It's not just that either, remember how Rudd signed that multi-billion dollar coal contract with China to much fanfare and applause? Ten new coal mines being opened and all that shit? I wonder what old Kev thinks the Chinese are going to do with that mountain of coal - surely not burn it and make lots of evil CO2 gas??

The hypocrisy is mind boggling, but it went by with barely a comment from the Rudd-worshipping media. Either the Canberra press gallery has been asleep these past few months or they've forgotten what their job is.

edit: this in reply to Kabab

wake up and smell the bullshit dude.

he could have a stated goal of having a 15 inch cock by 2050, but he wont BECAUSE HE WILL BE DEAD.

                                +1

cars are cheaper and more well equipped than ever. i don't see why the threshold of LCT needs to increase from 57k.

and contrary to other posts i struggle to see how people spending 57-100k on a car are middle class buyers. 30's to 40's sounds more like it to me.

on a mid $100k's joint income i sure as hell wont be spending that sort of coin on a car. i would love to, but i dont need to - its a luxury.
