I also think that a lot of people who complain that they can't afford to buy a house really mean that they can't afford to buy a really nice house in a highly desirable suburb close to the city/beach/work etc. There seems to no longer be a concept of "you've gotta start somewhere and work your way up", now it seems to be "you've gotta start at the top and have it all now".
That is utter crap, run the numbers on what it would cost you to buy the house your in now on a single wage, even substitute your 50k car for a 20k one and see if you could afford the mortgage repayments and meet all your other costs. It is this hollier than thou attitude that shits me to tears and is not based in reality. A starter house in outer metro areas of Brisbane will cost you will cost you in excess of 400k and doesn't get significantly cheaper until you are about 30kms from the CBD. These places are not suitable to bring up kids unless you want your kids to turn out to be drug addicted, unemployable fuckwits. The mortgage repayments on an average wage make this completely unattainable. Get your head out of your arse.

Comes across sounding like your view of everyone who lives in outer suburbs is an excellent example of the holier than thou attitude.

I grew up in the outer suburbs so I am well place to form this attitude, there is no fucking way I would let my kids grow up in those areas.

Can't comment on Bris, but I live in the outer suburbs (25km from the city) of here. There are good areas, bad areas, good people and dickheads in good areas and bad areas. Surely there must be somewhere in the outer suburbs (new estates where everyone has paid the same expensive entry price?) that is suitable for kids. The suburb I live in is not expensive (starts at about $350k for a 3br house and goes through to about $850k for the best stuff) but is relatively new (10yrs) and so misses out on the public housing dickheads, has lots of open space for kids, and misses out on the derros who paid $50k in 1980. In fact I would not raise my kids in any of the inner suburbs here.

living 25kms from the city is an hour and a half commute in brisbane, fuck that. My preference for where I actually would live is on a 5-10acre block in one of these areas, but the only problem is that your kids end up going to school with total deadshits.

b.t.w. 350k on an average wage is expensive.

Yes on the average wage it is. You're not on the average wage

yes, and I could by a 350k house, but that isn't what we are talking about. 350k only buys you total crack dens in outer metro brisbane, but some of them can be done up pretty cheaply.

If I was ever rich, I think I'd be like that. I'd still go to powercruise and not have a shower or change my clothes for 4 days

Not wanting to be a cunt, but I'd love a dollar for every time I'm heard that kind of bullshit. Seriously, how the fuck do you plan to survive for the next 50 years on money you earned before you turned 30?

Sooner or later you are going to have to bite the bullet. Who knows how long the housing market will stay flat for, but it certainly won't be forever. Not like you couold possibly be doing any good on the stock market with sand in your arse right now.

hmm.. interesting to read some thoughts. Reckon stalin is on the ball there, many people have got rich off property in the last 10 years, now they're redrawing the fug out of it.

Funny how the sharemarket absolutely getting whacked to kingdom come, worst financial crisis of the last 50 years, etc.. and many (not directed at anybody here) are still living large, or at least trying to via finance.

People looking to retire in the next couple of years suddenly have 10% less than they thought they had. For some with hundreds of $k in there, that can be a large amount. All that potential spending money is taken out of the economy, gone.

Wealth is getting smashed worldwide... I know at the moment I am shit scared to make any big purchases, and have been for 12 months following the overseas stuff and it's getting pretty full on. I still don't know if I am being paranoid, or being correctly cautious.

Seems to be ok here at the moment. But if it changes.. ouch. People have forgotten about hard times. Didn't the arse completely fall out of the luxury car market in the early 90's ? many would consider what is going on in the world economy as looking worse than that period right now.
