Im in the same boat. I could go out & buy something new & shiny...but it wouldnt be that awesome if it just sat in the garage all the time like the cruiser does now. So Ive decided to invest wisely in race cars & motorbikes & holidays...they are more fun than a garaged wealth statement.
If I was driving 20k + kms a year Id be different

Decent looking crack den 15km/25min (in peak hour) from the CBD. And you would have the honour of living near me! Cunt

Maybe I should have been clearer about the sort of people I'm talking about. I'm not talking about Mr and Mrs Average struggling on the average wage to make ends meet - they are genuinely having problems buying even an average house in the outer suburbs and I have total sympathy with their problem. It's bullshit that house prices were allowed to spin out of control in the way that they did, which has meant there are plenty of people who genuinely cannot afford even an ordinary house and will be renting forever at this rate.Originally posted by Dave View PostThat is utter crap, run the numbers on what it would cost you to buy the house your in now on a single wage, even substitute your 50k car for a 20k one and see if you could afford the mortgage repayments and meet all your other costs.
What I'm talking about are more your young professional types, earning good money but not good enough money to quite be able to afford to house of their dreams in a trendy or desirable location. To them I say "what's wrong with buying somewhere less nice for now and then trading up later", and I think the answer to that is snobbery. I can't afford to buy a place in Bondi but I'm too good to buy one in Campbelltown instead, so I'll rent and whinge.
It shits me to tears when I see these types of people quoted in newspaper articles about how tough it is for young people to buy houses these days when there are both options available to them if they want to buy a house, and plenty of people who genuinely can't afford to buy even the cheapest houses in our capital cities.
And, for the record, I grew up in the outer suburbs of Sydney (about 30km from the CBD I think) and I now live in the outer suburbs of Canberra (about 25km from the CBD). I have no problem with either as a place to live, and I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to have to live 30km from the CBD if you're looking for a reasonably priced house. You simply can't have a cheap house and also live close to the CBD, the beach, your workplace or whatever in most cases.

If you have 1 millions dollars in the bank you get currently 8% a year interest.Originally posted by Cal View PostNot wanting to be a cunt, but I'd love a dollar for every time I'm heard that kind of bullshit. Seriously, how the fuck do you plan to survive for the next 50 years on money you earned before you turned 30?
That works out at 80k a year
Move to Thailand and your become rich and don't pay tax.
When the shit turns come home and get the old age pension
I have friends who have retired at 30 to Turkey on the same plan. Admittedly they are bored in winter and run a monthly tab at the local bar

I wouldn't raise my kids in the inner suburbs either to tell you the truth. I like where I live - lots of parks etc to play in, decent schools, lots of other kids in the neighbourhood, don't get a lungful of exhaust fumes every time you walk down the street - sounds like a good place to raise kids to me.Originally posted by jizzmonkey View PostIn fact I would not raise my kids in any of the inner suburbs here.
(Edit: obviously this doesn't apply to Canberra, where the inner suburbs are pretty much the same as the outer suburbs and aern't anything like the inner suburbs of most other cities - could happily raise my kids there)

Nothing is banned in Thailand. Well prehaps except drug trafficing. Nice change from this fucking nanny state.Originally posted by edo View PostMust be banned in Thailand. The most dangerous risk of all - the risk of spending your life not doing what you want, on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later. - Randy Komisar.

looks quite nice, and pretty good value, I haven't been keeping my eye on the market lately. I am not cool enough to hang out with the japanese beer/latte/alfa and audi set quite yet. Anyway, not buying yet, will be moving to a high-set so we can set up a curtain workshop under the house to make cash monay to buy a decent high-set brick in everton park area (or so the plan goes). We are 18 months minimum away from buying a house with the new business idea. Prefer to get rid of debt in the mean time (and build worlds sickest VK).Originally posted by Turbo YodaI <3 Hamster
