If GM went down the production line would be up for sale, could be quiet a profitable thing to own.Originally posted by itsnotagsr View PostWhere would Holden be without the LS1 if GM went down????
Complete production lines are resold all the time.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla vanishes in the near future.the opening left in the market will hopefully let brands like tesla have a bigger share..

Alright so using BENN0's numbers theres a demand for 75,000 V8 cars per year in Aus - you seriously dont think BMW, Lexus, MB and whoever the fuck else wouldnt trim margins on top of getting better economies of scale to fill that gap?Originally posted by Crimsen Tide View PostThat's crap, the M5 costs 50,000 pounds in England, yet $220,000 here, that's not the Government, that's BMW. This is a small market, they will only send X amount here a year, so they put it at a price that will sell that X amount. Because of this they are then placed in the luxury car bracket, and are then taxed.
BMW, Lexus, Mercs and Audi's are considered top end brands here, where in Germany (except Lexus) they are used as Taxi's, so they jack the price up in Australia to keep it that way.
BTW i jumped on the Toyota japan site to see what sort of car you could compare with a Commodore/Falcon
* The Mark X is RWD, 3L V6 with 190kw and 6-sp auto standard, list price in Japan (using pre-crap exchange rates) is ~$35k
* The Crown Athlete is a RWD, 6 spd auto (not sure if theres a manual) 3.5L V6 in standard form with 232kw, with optional factory supercharger for 265kw/500nm, has all the fruit including leather interior if you want and weighs around 1700kg - in Japan list price (using pre-crap exchange rates) around $40-50k
* The Nissan japan website shows at least half a dozen models (not even counting variants) 6 and 8 cyl that would be roughly equivalent to Falcon/Commodore, i cbf trawling though pages of Klingon to dig out the specs but they are there

BMW have much larger markets around the world they'd prefer to sell the M5 in besides Australia (try Germany, England, America etc..), so therefore Australia is only alocated a certain amount each year (same as the M3). Because of this, the price is set at a rate which allows the supply to not outstrip demand ie, if only 100 are imported a year, and there are 100 people willing to buy them at $220,000ea, then sell them at $220,000ea, if they try and sell them for $230,000 they might only sell 98 of them. That's very basic but it's very much like what Holden has done with the W427.Originally posted by UZZ31 View PostAlright so using BENN0's numbers theres a demand for 75,000 V8 cars in Aus - you seriously dont think BMW, Lexus, MB and whoever the fuck else wouldnt trim margins on top of getting better economies of scale to fill that gap?
How would you be if you just bought a new M5 for $220,000 (mind you I'm only using this figure, they're probably around $240,000), and 6 months down the road BMW turned around and said "right we're selling the M5 in Australia for $45,000 to fill the void of no more Commodores and Falcons", you'd be wanting someones head!
Um, see how much they'll be after they've been Aus complienced + freight, good chance you'd have to add $10,000 - $20,000 per car as any modifications (like side intrusion bars) have to be added on the production line, this costs bulk dollars (to upgrade the production lines) and is therefore passed onto the end buyer. Wouldn't be worth the R&D for the small sales they'd get here.Originally posted by UZZ31 View PostBTW i jumped on the Toyota japan site to see what sort of car you could compare with a Commodore/Falcon

I guess we'll never know as i very much doubt Falcon/Commodore will suddenly disappear, but my point is to say no other manufacturers make cars roughly equivalent in specs and price to them is crap
