If you're going WRX that'll get real spendy real quick 'cause you'll need a decent gearbox (6MT STi box & good diffs FTW), you'll need to redo most of the engine work (Jap Subaru track car stuff I've seen is fucking terrible & shoddy) and I'd be surprised if you didn't have to redo the roll cage with something that isn't made out of toilet rolls and dried seaweed.

Thats because most old Stis/Evos are just track shitters to the Japs. Its like buying a V6 Commodore. You wouldn't spend big money on doing it right. Just whatever works on a budget.

Can anyone compare the handling of an AW11 MR2 vs an early Mx5? Seem to be similar price for a decent AW11 s/c.

Yes, they are the fucking devil.

And if you want it to work in Aus, you'll need to spend time and money. As a "budget" track car, I don't reckon Subarus are worth it.

Anything with "Evo", "Sti" or "GTR" on it usually means $$$$.

dont know first hand but have been told it's like racing a really short VW beetle. Very easy to swap ends and crazy liftoff oversteer and such.

Most efficent way to do faster laps times is to do more laps. Therefore you need to spend more on track days and less on bigger turbos.

I did my CAMS Licence in my wifes bog standard Diahatsu Applause (long story) ..I beat out a number of cars that had much more power.

A mate of mine does supersprints in a 1983 BMW 5 series that is bog standard....SHE came 2nd in her class last year....guess what no turbo, coil overs, front mounts etc etc.

More importantly she did loads of track time and very little keyboard dreaming.

Because they were doing it wrong and put the engine in the wrong place. The 2nd one was nearly as bad too. I actually quite like them, but for fun scarefree giggles, I'd take the MX5 everytime.

This is the truth, you need to be in the car as often as possible.

thats the plan, but i also want to make sure the car is reliable for track work.

I'll take that on board (genuinely) and thats why I'm keen on just getting out there once the car is reliable enough to have fun in.

I dont claim to have webberish skills but I'm confident enough given what I have done and speaking to people that have run at the tracks I mentioned that the times are achievable with me behind the wheel.

Just have to sort my garage out over the month of the may and then get do the must haves such as the fucked rear brakes and broken exhaust hangers and I'll probably do the suspension up front but eng mods I'll wait till the rest of the car is sorted.

in my experience if it can get you to and from work for a week you'll get 12 months of racing without any mechanical failures that arent caused by oil surge or hitting things. the small amount of time on the track at full noise is tiny compared to the time spent driving a car on the road normally.

its rego'd but I dont drive it. I'd much rather prepare it properly then just lob up to the track and hope for the best.

First track in June is the plan.

                                Couldnt agree more.

Time gained around Wakefield Park with an extra 100hp when the blower went on: Nil. Actually I went slower cos my driving sucked ass and the extra power just made it worse.

Time gained when I got some decent suspension (billies + custom springs by Heasmans): over 4 seconds a lap straight out of the box, going from dry to damp surface too.
