R31s have alot of cheap parts available, and probably one of the best model specific forums around (www.r31skylineclub.com.au). People do RB30E+Ts on that site all the time and if you shopped for second hand bits you'd get a real bargain.

But you probably won't be as fast or as light as an S13/MX5.

You should have bought it. Wasn't a bad buy at $15K.

Finally - after dredging through 7 pages of dancing around the issue of a "good" social track car - someone eventually nails it.

Who cares if its fast point to point if it is dead in the steering and chassis, gearbox feels like a spoon in a bowl of yogurt, and the brakes only tell you when they are already locked instead of feeling each wheel

Some cars are more rewarding to drive and provide better feedback - do what they are told and reward the precise driver. An MX5 will do this.

Hmm I'm thinking of an under$10k track hack too - hence found the thread. Start with time attack sprints again from a 10yr hiatis, but want something that does have a class incase it gets more serious.
Mine will also need to have reg as I am interested in Leyburn and classic rally etc

I was thinking AE86 or AW11 but Cal has scared me off the AW11. My wife had an MX5 I did track once or twice, but not sure if its the best car for me or not

Funny how many of the comparisons in this thread are talking about cars that take far more than $10k to make them decent on a track.

I doubt very much that an S13 will be as quick as a similarly prepped MX5 - have never seen it happen yet (S15 yes). An MX5 with 200rwkw will do 1:16s at Oran Park on old rubber. Forget MR2s - they are as Cal rightly said - pure handling evil. Ask Toyota why they stopped backing them in local racing........because $10k MX5s were whipping factory backed cars in the early 2000s.

No 4wd rally rocket will be as quick for the same money either - and be reliable, because that people is why the MX5 is the king of the track hacks. They are stupidly reliable. Simple cars you car drive the shit out of and drive home. When you crack 10s at Wakefield in a car with less than 100 rwkw - then you are ready to step up to something faster.
A slow day at the track is better than any day in the office.

It doesn't matter what you choose as long as you choose something and get out there. Spend your money on tyres, brakes and suspenson ( in that order) and just have fun. We threw a vr wagon around at Oran and it was a hoot. Good tyres and welded diff and no other invesent made. Auto killed it tho lol
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

i eventually bought an s1 s14 for 9k, sold the spare rims & misc spares for 1.5k and got some tyres, brakes & suspension which ended well under 10k. I could of squeezed a nistune, bigger inj & AFM in there for 10k but didnt bother.

I then decided to add some extra stuff to it so its currently in the garage getting done but this will push the total over 10k.

As an aside and out of nothing more then curiosity I will doing some under car aero work on it. A mate has just finished uni degree and part of it was looking at basic car aero so we will look how a cheapish/simple front splitter, under tray and rear diffuser can be done on this car.
                      RB26......................Again

there was a vr/vs wagon out at oran park yesterday, social track day, on stockies cutting track times just off sti, porsches etc, kept up with the ls1 commodores easy.

the joy of knowing if you hit the wall it's only going to cost another grand to get another car...

it's all about the size of your balls and what you want to risk really in my books.

Thanks Kev - good to still see a few familiar names around.

I wasn't dead - just more on model specific forum sites (the ones I believe TOnyGTST says are full of one eyed penis heads )
for my daily driver (which no I do not want to use on the track.)

That and was more focused on dirtbikes for a while. But now I have two young boys the dirtbike sits in the shed a fair bit and I think a race car build would be fun for everyone once they get a bit older. In the meantime if I can find a race hack - have a few sprints to see if I
                          a)like the car
                          b) wanna go further

                          - then put it on stands in the shed and strip it and build it slowly

Get something like this that has most of the work done and it has the benefit of being able to be raced in a historic series (which is more fun) drives from the right end and is made on the right continent.
