Rather than start another "which-car-V11,001,342 x 10^5" thread i figure i may as well ask here. I have a feeling i know what the answer will be but....just how bad of an idea is a Discovery 1? In the market for a cheap 4x4 that can be put on club reg and used for family day trips in the bush and occasionally towing the Gemini. It wont be something thats daily driven, more a two or three times a month kind of deal. How bad is bad?

Did search PF and got the usual results like "its fucking shit you will die" followed by "omg its slow". Kind of makes you wonder how shit it is if people think slow is a problem [its a 4wd its not meant to be fast!]. I realize a GQ or 60/80 Series landcruiser is a much safer bet but i dont think one will fit my meagre budget.

Let me put it this way:
I own my Rover sedan because its been in the family since forever. Would I buy another one. No fucking way. The only redeeming feature is the V8 and that's american, plus it is cursed with small heads. I have spent 4k and bought a pretty quick road engine for it, which will require twice the money for the same amount of add ons as an LS1 to go even faster.

As for the Disco's, they're nice when they work. V8 noises, comfy ride etc. But they're just English. Things are hard to get to with a ring spanner. You start to wonder how England beat Germany with this kind of engineering. A job that would take an hour on a Landcruiser takes 2 on a Disco or a Rangie. I have been offered free Discos and I always turn them down, it's not worth the ballache. My dad had a freebie Diesel Disco at one stage and it was diabolically slow.

So to sum up, sure, if you want a cheap 4x4 that you don't really care about and are ready to throw down coin on random things that will fail or just as easily prepared to go "meh" and throw it away and buy another cheap one, go for it.

Mitsus arent really my thing. Watched one too many grenade and expire in a cloud of smoke to go down that path [no offence to anyone that owns one]

My dad swears by Pajeros and to be honest, they are ok. Just as comfy as a Rangie or Disco but without the next level shitness of being English. Agreed, I reckon they make cars that are designed to fall apart after 5 years but his NM was still going ok after 10 years (petrol v6 - slow and shit at towing but pretty good at 4x4'ing) and his latest diesel one is tits. I'd go a Pajero over a Rangie or Disco anytime.
