V10 could well be the same bolt pattern as they've been using on the small 6s since the 70s.

However you might be thinking of some guys bolting the V8 (E9x) M3's manual box to the V10. Hopefully that would last longer before turning into swarf.

Getrag 6 speed in any BMW sucks balls, SMG or not.

If I had one and had gearbox troubles it would be cheaper and possibly better to invest in converting to a (perish the thought) T56 or other box.....but then you run in to issues with gear position torque limiting as well.

The high torque gearboxes used in their premium/sport vehicles are ZF's. ZF S6-53 and it's variants specifically. Any high output diesel, N54/N55 or M3/M5/M6 have one. Don't know why you would want to go backwards. M5's just have that fancy twin clutch setup.
