Quick search on buyers guides suggestions these things are pretty mechanically sound. What are PF thoughts? I'll be looking at cars that are over 100,000km+. It appears the only thing to look out for is the Haldex service every 40,000km.

Idea is a comfortable and cheap daily to squirt around in. Maybe the odd mountain sprint.
If I had one of those I’d need my wife to send the emergency services to rescue me from tunnels. I’d literally die from starvation just to hear the sound of the engine.

        C215 CL500s
Anyone know of any known issues? A quick google search mainly suggests things to look out for are the generic electrical gremlins. But nothing that seems common and major. Apparently the cars in the states have a complex and troublesome oil based hydroilc suspension setup which we didnt get (????).

They can look shit hot with the right boots

        Crazy cheap too.

^^ The one in your car sales link is possibly a UK import with the way the speedo looks to be dominantly labelled for MPH.

Seems every time I see a cheap high-end Benz they’re ex Hong Kong or UK... may not be a bad thing but may also not be a great thing.

Yup you're probably right. But top end of the market for aus delivered examples seam to be $25k, with the bottom end of the market being $14-17k. Either way, thats a crap load of car for your money. Just trying to work out what the catch is. Yes, you'd expect maintainence of these things to be expensive, but there doesnt appear to be much issues (from what I can see)?

Yep, delivered in GB 12th May 2000 according the the MB VIN decode. Dual scale speedo is a UK thing, another trainspotter giveaway is the number plate screw holes, 2 holes along the horizontal centerline of the recess.
The C215 used air suspension, last hydro S class was the W140. Electrically they are fragile, we had door lock actuators fail on cars less than a year old. Trim "felt" cheap and nasty compared to the W140, more perception than actual poor quality to be honest. Iirc Clarkson commented that you need a black light when looking at buying one, and maybe a drug sniffer dog.
Fuck they're lovely cars though, not "quick" especially in 500 form but they're the dog's danglies. The black one on Maclaren SLR wheels is how I like them, just hope it's a V12 with those quad pipes.

Biggest issue is people paying >$30k for a car that was closer to $300k when new but forgetting that just because it's worthless doesn't mean it cost's nothing to own one. Get one with full specialist/dealer service history and you should be safe. No history, run away FAST.

Thanks mate. And your not wrong. I just enquired about these on a facebook group and someone gave a good rundown on costs. I wont mention old mates name, but this was his quote

I’ve had mine approximately 2 years.. absolutely love the car. Very hard to comment on reliability as it sort of is car to car, main issue is the abc active body control suspension. That’s the main reason they are so cheap. Mine has had fair amount of abc work done by previous owner , approximately $15,000 worth over its life, I recently has the abc pump replaced for $2600. My last B service including spark plugs was $2900, engine and transmission mount $1600. They do love fuel also, around $120+ to fill won’t get too far.
I’ve also had the audio all re done for approximately $4000.
But they are absolutely amazing cars. So much value and luxury for the money, really don’t feel old, got everything a new car has and more. Drives beautiful suspension like nothing else, it’s great on long drives and pillarless coupe is wonderful in summer.

It’s never let me down or had any issues besides the abc pump which I knew would need doing at some point. ‘
Can’t really complain though getting a $300,000+ car for under $20K.
Very hard to find a good one that’s doesn’t have hidden issues but good ones are worth the buy

Still probably not bad value cosidering the luxury you get. But those bills our out of my price range.

EDIT: Replacing the ABC appears to be a DIY'ble task.

Shit, I forgot about the ABC system, to be honest we only had 1 C215 in Canberra and that was hidden upstairs at the dealership. I think the ABC was probably aimed at better road holding than airmatic, because I don't recall any difference in the ride, although it must be said even metal suspension E class rode very well.

Yup, in typical mercedes style of pushing boundries.

It seems if you can DIY the labour on the ABC and do the basic maintainence youself, it might be a cheap proposition to own something cool. I'm just trying to work out exactly how DIYable it is. I think parts alone will be $1500. Still not bad if thats the biggest pill to swallow in these things. But a 3k mor service is pretty crazy.
