Care to elaborate? I don't know anything about them (except they sound great according to youtube). The strangely undersquare nature of them adds to the appeal to me. Wiki suggests they are a fair whack down on torque compared to the 4.0

has owned a 530, 535 and 540.. all in manual. and he can steer like a boss.

rated the 535 way above the other 2. the 6's had rack and pinion, the V8s went back to recirc steering, and he reckoned they were sloppy compared to the 6. they were also very maintenance intensive compared to the 6. and the 3.4 went almost as hard as the 4.0.
he didnt end up owning the 530 long before flipping it. he now owns an M5.. and is a very happy chappy

The I6 is the pick of the bunch. I have thrashed a few of the e34s in different configs and a 535 manwell with a 3.9 diff is the pick (m5 aside).

Have steered in anger many many times, hills and mountains have made a number of later model by the numbers should be faster look silly

You've got the steering thing mixed up with E39s, because all E34s were recirc ball. The E34 540i slushbox I drove was very meh, because even the 4.0 v8 needs to be revved. So a 530i with 100 Nm less isn't an appealing prospect.

The 6 cyl 535i with 3 pedals is indeed a fine combo. Ancient motor (1960s design), but a nice wide powerband, revs sweetly, easy to work on and bulletproof.

E39 5 series had R&P for I6 and recirc ball for V8s. Mpower had some work to do with the E39 M5.
