Out of interest, what goodies did the clubsport get over the SS (other than the HSV price tag)?
There's the obvious stuff like the better seats, HSV bodykit, wheels etc as well as HSV suspension. There will also be some less obvious 'little things' as the Clubby was Berlina based in those days whereas the SS was Exec based, so you'll find things like map lights, maybe climate control, that kind of thing.

Okey doke, had a chat with the owner.

It's an auto, not a manual.

It's a 1 owner car, he bought it brand new, full service history etc, never been bingled - a real good honest car.
He was going to hand it over to his son real soon, they just fitted $2700 worth of headers, high flow cats & exhaust system, shortly after it developed the knock.
Other than the exhaust & headers it is dead stock.

He's coming down to have a look at my SS - looks like his son will get it.

Plan in progress is to get a mate around the corner to whip the donk out, I'll sort the bottom end out, give the heads a bit of porting, a mill to bump the comp & some decent valve springs, sling a cam in & scratch up an LS6 intake to go with the OTRCAI I got from Chuck. I'll port the TB & when it's back together either hit up Dale for a mail order tune or get a local to tune it.

Auto is a plus and a minus - I'd love a manual, but it'd cause issues with the missus as she couldn't drive it (that's the main reason I got an auto to start with), so I'll live with the auto.

Opinions please, did my sums & this is what I've come up with:

Remove & refit motor by a mate for cash
Alltorque 2800-3000rpm lock up converter with all the good bits
                  Full gasket set
                  Head bolts
                  Bearings
                  Camtech cam
Second hand LS6 intake & injectors

Allowing $200 for the unforseen in the short motor it'd cost me around $3k to have a mint VT clubsport that makes around 280rwkw with a fresh motor, new hi-stall converter, new headers & full exhaust system.

                  Worth it?

Nah, not that one, pretty much identical except that one has a dead piston, this one had a dead rod brg.

fair enough - thought it may have been listed after a first initial diagnosis, what's the chances of two exactly the same with "terminal" failures the same week in the same place!

Pretty good actually, the early LS1's love killing rod bearings & slugs.

The ( very ) thrashed LS1 in my track car will get a noisy rod bearing if i pull the lead of that cylinder but will disapear when load is added to it , im guessing its a matter of time before it becomes terminal but its been like that for a about 6 track days now and has been cammed up to over 260rwkw recently .
