Shame.
I have an unopened 3.0 24v I6 in a Corona Mk2 with 48mm ITBs. Sounds porn, and was good enough for a 13.8 quarter and a 1:10 around Calder. Norbie's been in it. Does that make me cool or uncool?
Proudly presenting the new foot long chocolate Subway.

You know what ? It don't matter how fast he goes, he'll still have a fucking ball pushing it to the limit. The fun factor is still there in a 2k shitter when you actually get out on the track. If his passion is Mercs then good luck, go Clayto...
If however he wants to go reasonably fast on a budget, he couldn't possibly have picked a worse car ! Cut your losses, and build something that actually makes sense. 200sx, Rex, early Evo, MX-5 etc etc...
And i reckon the rear wheel drive 200sx or the MX-5 would put the biggest grins on that large face of his - and his missus !
The older i get, the better i was...

Oh dear Clayton, you should have stopped about 5 cars ago.Originally posted by FatBoy View PostAnd i reckon the rear wheel drive 200sx or the MX-5 would put the biggest grins on that large face of his - and his missus !

Anyhow I agree with Norbie here. The car has no inherent cool value as a 190E. If you want fasts on a budget, then go the Toyota. Do what makes YOU happy. Not what makes anyone else happy or purist sense.
One day I'll get around to putting a motor in my Val and most probably won't be a Mopar motor (unless I win lotto and have an unlimited budget, in which case it would be a 426) and I couldn't care less what other people think is better, cooler or right. It's my car, my decision, and I'll build it however the fuck I like. If it makes me happy, then alls good.
The customer.

Did you sell the century?Originally posted by Norbie View PostI know my car isn't cool by anyone's definition except my own,
I reckon putting the 1j in Claytons merc is like putting an LS? in the century...
Clayton, If youre committed to doing this horrible thing then at least make it stupid...how much more is a 2j over a 1j?
I dont think youre going to be able to get over how much it will understeer though...that front end is awesome for normal driving (it gains camber & castor as you turn it harder so it gets light in parking, but remains all stable & nice driving down the road). It will want to fall over on the outside wheel & push like a bastard. The engine choice will be the least of your challenges.
While youve got it all in bits, pull the spring out of one side disconnect the steering & move it up & down & lock to lock take some measurements so you can see what you need to resolve. It could be super easy but I remember thinking it would be a total headfuck on mine

I thought the Merc front end behaves the way it does because of a tonne of king pin inclination? (ie when viewed from the front the line between the upper and lower pivots of the front upright are layed over alot)?
If it's a strut frontend, it'll be a hassle to fix, if it's double wishbone it's a case of fabricated wishbones and an upright swap."Where can we get hold of a Vincent Black Shadow?" "Whats that?" "A fantastic bike," I said. "The new model is something like two thousand cubic inches, developing two hundred brake-horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute on a magnesium frame with two styrofoam seats and a total curb weight of exactly two hundred pounds."
