Why does it seem everyone is against this, well bar a couple of us?
This place thrives on different.
I changed my mind once I realised what the Merc donk was going to cost. I condone 500rwhp now.

Nice theory, but in practice I get hassled for information about this car almost every time I take it out of the garage, and people are staring at the thing constantly. I'm not trying to say it's the most awesomest car in the world, but I find it hard to imagine a stock 190E would generate that much interest or attention, even among Merc fans.
Precisely. A 1JZ/2JZ offers great bang for your buck, there's a huge amount of JZ-specific knowledge out there, massive aftermarket support, and above all it fits without major surgery. I have nothing against an LS1 conversion in principle but if getting it in will be a headfuck why even consider it? Apart from the fact some guy on the internet doesn't "rate" the alternative.
You should get out more...seriously though, people look at it because they dont know what it is or why it exists. No cunt ever looks at my Landcruiser so I got no cool cred whatsoever.
I get the whole JZ thing...I just dont get why you'd stick it in a merc/commodore/BMW/whatever when they come in toyotas from the factory that are really cheap. If its all about cost effectiveness Clayton would be better served selling the Merc in bits & buying an Aristo.
Sticking it in a 190E is just a hard way to try to go fast...& the hard way always ends up more expensive to get the same result.
So, if the aim is as stated to go fast, then ditch the merc altogether, if it is to do something different/interesting then Id say the merc engine is still a better option.
I think the aim is for Clayton to have something he wants that also fits in the budget, is not a 12yr project requiring surgery to 95% of the car and a zillion custom parts and at the end of it all will not be something that he sits there and thinks "fuck I wish I had more power rather than sticking to the brand etc etc". Instead he should be thinking "fuck this car is fun to drive and it's mine how I wanted it and be fucked what any internet cunt thinks even if they are right/wrong/know me/don't etc.
aristos being nearly the ugliest car in existence is a pretty good reason. They look like someone did a big turd and then put windows in it.

Now how does a $9k engine conversion (using a more shit engine at that) look like a good idea...I mean you dont even get big ugly chrome wheels...
There are a few manual converted Aristo's around but its not quite as simple as dropping the gearbox in cutting a hole for the shifter
other than mounts / tailshaft the main issue is around the handbrake - has to be moved from the floor (pedal operated) to the center console of which there is no real provision / space.
If you wanted a OEM 4 door manual JZ just buy a Chaser.... cheap now too.

And better served again buying a stock WRX or S15 or whatever everyone else is doing these days. Have you forgotten which forum you're on?
Methinks Clayton is the best judge as to what does or doesn't serve his needs. He has a Merc, he wants to make it fast on a budget, a JZ conversion is a very sensible way of doing this. I fail to see the problem.
Why don't you put a set of cool wheels on it, a towbar and come MX5 racing?
