FWIW can't remember specific $'s but were something along these lines:
Merc engine:
Stage 1) Engine, box, basic EFI on stock wrecker motor (stock intake/exhaust manifolds) - $13k - 180rwhp (maybe)
Stage 2) +ITB's & exhaust - $17k - 210rwhp
Stage 3) +built engine - $20-25k - 250rwhp
JZ engine:
- 1jzgte 5speed cut (30 day warranty)+exhaust+clutch+intercooler+radiator - $9k - 300rwhp
(again these figures are rough - cant remember specifics but we did spend a number of hours compiling)
For a married guy after a bit of weekend fun (260det style sprints, drags, powercruise) who is paying a mortgage, just had his 2nd child & a wife all over financials i reckon the decision was a no brainer.
Note - Sale of the car was not-an-option.
