The point is an OEM-spec 190E can only be improved by an engine conversion, while the three cars mentioned above would be diminished. Hence the comparison is not a valid one.

I admit it, I'm not cool enough to buy a Ford taxi and hand it over to a performance workshop along with a signed blank cheque.

On the other hand I do have experience taking a cheap modest car, pulling it apart in my own shed, and turning it into something fast/interesting on a realistic budget. I'll leave it up to Clayto to judge which is more relevant to his situation.

I wasn't the one making judgment calls about who is or isn't cool/awesome. I'm merely pointing out the guy doesn't have unlimited funds and has to work with what he's got. Compromises will be made, but if he's having fun who gives a shit?

Clayton made all the decisions, we put on paper the true cost of both conversions (and let the figures do the talking)...

FWIW can't remember specific $'s but were something along these lines:

Merc engine:
Stage 1) Engine, box, basic EFI on stock wrecker motor (stock intake/exhaust manifolds) - $13k - 180rwhp (maybe)
Stage 2) +ITB's & exhaust - $17k - 210rwhp
Stage 3) +built engine - $20-25k - 250rwhp

JZ engine:
- 1jzgte 5speed cut (30 day warranty)+exhaust+clutch+intercooler+radiator - $9k - 300rwhp

(again these figures are rough - cant remember specifics but we did spend a number of hours compiling)

For a married guy after a bit of weekend fun (260det style sprints, drags, powercruise) who is paying a mortgage, just had his 2nd child & a wife all over financials i reckon the decision was a no brainer.

Note - Sale of the car was not-an-option.
