The driver who killed a young couple and their infant child in Saturday night's horrific Canberra crash was a serial car thief on bail in the ACT and NSW facing vehicle charges.

In a chilling twist, it has been revealed that the driver, 23-year-old Justin Charles Williams, knew the occupants of the other car.

Williams died at the Canberra Hospital on Saturday night after the stolen Mazda 626 he had been driving slammed into the young family's Mazda 3 on Canberra Avenue at Narrabundah at a speed estimated at up to 150km/h.

The three occupants of the other car, 33-year-old Scott Oppelaar, his girlfriend, 29-year-old Sam Ford, and the couple's three-month-old boy, Brody, died instantly when their car disintegrated on impact.

Williams's passenger, his 18-year-old girlfriend Skye Webbe, remained in an induced coma at the Canberra Hospital last night in a serious but stable condition.

Williams's sister revealed to The Canberra Times yesterday that her brother and Mr Oppelaar were ''good mates'' and that they shared the same friends.

Williams's driver's criminal record goes back to 2002, when he was just 15, and records 37 convictions mostly for traffic offences, including stealing cars, driving while unlicensed and possessing fake number plates.

He also had convictions for theft, burglary and possessing stolen property.

Williams was facing a charge of stealing a car and leading police on a chase through south Canberra in September 2008 with police calling off the pursuit because of the thief's driving after he mounted a bike path on Drakeford Drive in Kambah in the stolen Holden.
