I wonder how soon the FGs will get down into the 40s. We have a kid on the way so it may be perfect timing in a year or two if we need a large car.

Can anyone explain what makes the auto so good in the FG? I have a DSG GTI at the moment, it is great, but there are still times occasionally when I wish I had a clutch pedal but the Mrs only drives auto.
            Because its a ZF..

did you just leave it in drive, or shift it?

                mid 12's is fucking impressive
I had it in performance mode with auto shifting.

Car is 100% stock, 40psi in the tyres etc. It's only done 4000 km so the engine might still be a bit tight.

727? In the CXC? I thought they were all 904s.

nope 727. smooooooth, ive never owned a chrysler with one before, and i AM really surprised at how smooth it is behind the ol 360.

i knew they could take 500hp standard, but wasnt aware of how silky they were.

                      torqueflights > overrated zf's .
i didnt think that much of the zf behind the Falcons , not bad but it's nothing special considering the writeups.. still hunts , still lags around a bit ...suppose compared to the old BTR and B/W boxes that ford used forever its great but meh ,maybe my expectations were too high....if the motoring people say its good everyone justs goes along with it i reckon .

it's a European 6speed gearbox. And it shits on anything else available for the money in Australia. The corporate GM box behind holdens V8 and V6 is many steps behind the ZF, which becomes standard on all ford models as of FG II.
The fact is, every ZF equipped falcon I've been in(a few) has had crisp shifts, virtually undetectable really, never needed to hunt, as it always seemed to find the perfect gear and just sit on it till required to change, and provided a great fuel economy and good acceleration(hard to do with falcons 2.xx final drive)
mate the F6 to ZF and you have a winning combo.
Pity about the shit tyres. But that's easily fixed.

Agreed, I've been really disappointed with ZF Falcon autos. The only thing that's particularly good is the close gear ratios, but then any 6 speed would have the same thing.

I don't find the gear changes any smoother than any other decent auto - you can easily feel them. Still gets stuck in the wrong gear and has to kick down when you least want it to, like when slowing to walking pace and going to accelerate again, and it's still in 2nd.

That said it's still a good transmission, but doesn't even come close to living up to all the hype from the Ford fanboys.

not bad time and MPH for a stocker coon at all! Quite average 60ft that can be improved but no doubt with good good rubber/launch low 12's easy!

The F6 is the only auto fg I've driven so I can't comment on other combos, however in the F6 I find it to be excellent. It never hunts, it always changes up at just the right time. In the 3rd gear and up it kicks down exactly when I want it to. It won't kick back to 1st with a large throttle opening which is a good idea.

I guess with other engines with less torque it might not work so well. Before I got the car I was an auto trans skeptic. I wouldn't have in auto trans in every car I own, but I reckon it's perfect for this car.

Remember the ZF learns your driving pattern, get into one thats been grandpa'd and then go and flog it, it will take a while for it to relearn, and vise versa.
