As I've found out from personal experience this week another unusual thing to be aware of is quite a few MY06-MY07 2.5 motors are having failures of the solenoid valves in the new secondary air system they introduced from MY06 onwards.

Turns out the valves don't drain water so if any gets in the system it pools and will rust and corrode the two valves to the point of failure. Replacement from Subaru is $700 per valve, plus $2000 for the airpump and about $1000k labour as half the accessories on top of the motor need to come off.

This is just an emissions things that helps combust fuel during cold starts so you can buy blanking plates from the US for $70 and get the CELs that come up blocked at the ECU.

I was lucky and knew someone who had a track car so picked up some near new ones cheap and the one that needed replacing was the easiest to get at. Mine failed @ 120k on a Feb '06 build XT but apparently others have gone as early as 60k.

Nah apparently Subaru realised they fucked up royally and redesigned them from '08 onwards. But not being a safety thing they didn't do a recall. Doesn't happen to everyone but happens often enough to be something you need to watch out for.

It is a pity really because mine is coming off lease and has been such a great car I decided to do the big services, get new tyres/clutch, pay it out for $12k and keep it for another 4 years or so.

Yeah I'll be taking dads off him when it comes of the lease. Hoping about 15k or so which will rock for a XT Forrester in basically as close to new as a 5 year old car is.

              such awesome machines.

Cheers for that Mick, how common is this?

Where is the best place to buy the fix to this?

Re the air valves thing, mine fucked out on my MY06 wrx at around 105k km, saw the price. So bought a tactrix cable instead for $200 to reflash the computer to disable the CEL codes. The air pumps are only for emissions. you can also buy block off plates if you want to completely remove the air pump system.
Also if it is the same as the WRX the timing belt is done at 125k km which is a rather expensive job, cheapest i found belt and idler pullys was $409 + fitting

Timing belt is 100k or 5 years, which ever comes first.

Fuck now this has got me worried...but if its only for emissions then meh.

The only reason i commented on the timing belt as i thought it had the same 2.5l as the MY06/07 wrx which was at 125k km according to the service manual.

some of the newer liberty and crap are at 125k, so check the book for your model.

I don't know how common the valve failure thing is. It isn't half of all cars but I'd say a lot more than a few percent. But because it is a design flaw as they age I reckon the percentage will increase exponentially to the point where at something like 10 years of age most will have gone. Unless you can get second hand parts cheap, block off plates and blocking CELs is a few hundred dollar and a permanent fix.

Also MY06 XT Forester timing belt at 125k, spark plugs at 112.5k, pre MY06 was 100k for both.

What did this set you back to fix? My window switch is fucked (auto up), Subaru wanted $400 to fix it. Cunts.

Quite happy otherwise with my MY06 XT auto, thinking about off-loading it but I'm not sure what I'd replace it with.

The MY06 have better wheels than the MY05, a deciding factor for me
