Yes get checks done. On the upside, being in a caryard youn could easily get them to knock 1k off the price.

      Deposit down

I took a deposit on my bike and in the meantime I had offers for more moneys (more than I was asking) but I honoured the deposit.

It wasn't a Gullwing Merc, just a Mazda (n/a 4cyl not rotor). I'm a bit fussy on colour as well as the condition and kms and this one was just what I wanted. I've just seen another one, a couple of years younger at a caryard in Sydney with 20K less kms (second choice colour) but for about a grand more. Do you still need to proceed with all the checks if you are buying from a caryard and the car has three year warranty?
        You're buying an MX5 aren't you......

Or the seller got an offer and sold it. Money talks.

most honest guys will honor someone that puts a deposit down while getting the checks done, then if it checks out buy it
Yep and include a note on the deposit. Subject to CLEAR TITLE and no faults up to $xxx amount the repair. That way you will get your money back if the car isn't up to scratch or atleast have a negotiation point.

You did the right thing. No way would I put down a deposit/buy a car sight unseen (unless it was like a $300 rolling shell). Just keep looking.

I normally put a deposit down subject to being satisfied with the inspection. I get it made out in writing and signed by the owner. Has worked for me every time.

It happens though, half the time you call up on a Saturday morning to organise to go see a car it's already sold. There'll be another one out there. Some people just don't bother getting inspections, but I'd prefer the piece of mind.

Depends if you are mechanically minded or not. A revs check is a definite and I usually do that before I bother making a trip out to see a car.

With the car you viewed, it is possible the owner CBF'ed dealing with someone who wanted to take the car to a mechanic, especially if he has had others come and fuck him around prior to you rocking up and he dropped the price for a quick sale.

All comes down to how confident you feel in buying the car without a mechanic viewing, clearly you didn't so you did the right thing.

let me see if I have this right...
                          a dealer has a car 2 years newer & 20 000km LESS
for an extra $1k with warranty
.hmmmm.....so much for dealers being stealers.

yes, still do mechanical checks. 3 year warranty is just a crap insurance policy masquerading as a warranty

Carsales is a PITA. I guess iI should expect to deal with drongos when selling a $2500 VP, but seriously, wtf??

"Offer you $500 cash - what is your address"
"What is your lowest price that you will accept" Kind of understand this question, but no other questions were asked whatsoever.
