    Ford 289 manual conversion

Thinking about a T5 5 speed box behind a ford 289. What their shifter like? I have never driven one so I am not sure if the feell is clunky truck-like shift or a decent feel. Do the after market shifters improve it?

Not looking at huge horsepower, just a pleasant sunday driver.

The only good thing about a T5 is its shift feel IMO.

Behind a 289 I reckon it'd be ok, try to get one from a Series 3 AU XR8 though. They cost more but have a higher torque and power rating as they are the "z" spec box.

read up on Fox series (and I think SN95) mustangs. They came with 302s and t5s with the "gold class" or whatever its called t5. People seem to run good times with them and get them to last

sv_i - you mean "world class" t5's. Different casing and supposedly stronger than the early stuff.

Aftermarket shifters are supposed to improve the feel, but all depends on what you like.

People generally say T5's feel better than TKO's or T56's but again thats subjective and comparing to boxes which are pretty clunky/notchy.

A 289 isn't going to severely tax any gearbox, I'd bet a six banger box would last quite well behind one.
Although if it was me, I'd put a Toyota W box behind it.

Don't Toyota boxes have a mega low first gear though?

It depends on which one you get. Certainly they don't have the super low first when behind the inline sixes.

its cheaper to get a T5 than a W/R box + conversion kit.

                a T5 will last fine behind a 289
