Nah for ally you have to have a foot pedal, no other way to start and finish with out it. Yea Choppo that's why i use the thin filler, easier to get a nice flat bead. I have welded mostly 3m, gonna do some thinner stuff soon.

        Ja.
I tried some ~1mm alloy - blew a hole it at the start the first time, then got reasonable the next two or three times I tried it.

Most of the tig's at Granville TAFE have a foot pedal and if they dont' they have it on the torch. Practicing with someone looking over your shoulder and pointing out what you did wrong can really speed up the learning time. I also learnt a lot from watching others weld and seeing what they were doing when things went wrong.

Best effort so far with the TAFE machines.
Still not good enough but not totally shit.

Fill all the corners in first, then weld, try that.

I've been quizzed Rz a bit on things and watching him weld a bit, all that helps.

Yeah seems to be doing okay. I really need to get off my arse and use it more though. Pedro the Welder reckons it works okay for a home welder unit.

glad i found the few threads on here bout ebay machines!
everyone gives them so much shit canning everywhere else lol.
i dont have the coin to go for a full ac/dc unit with all the bells, so i'm looking at a 200a DC with pulse.
a welder i know said not to bother with the pulse on a dc only unit, but its only $50 more anyway so thought why not.

has anyone had any experience with the 'cheaper' machines?
i really only have around the $400 mark to spend, but i can pickup this unit for $600, so it kinda makes thing i should just save up a bit more to get the betterer unit.

i wont be welding alloy much but i have a feeling once i start making shit in ali, i would be pretty keen to make as much shit as possible lol.
im really just after a tig to do stuff like steampipe and exhaust shit amongst plenty of other random stuff.

                            $350 dc with pulse.
                            http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271108036...orig_cvip=true

$600 unit with ac/dc, pulse and plasma cutter
                            http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....X:eRTM:AU:1123

                            any thoughts?

Just get the acdc, no way I would only want to weld steel unless you were a stainless fabricator.

After trying to weld aluminium with a DC tig, i got an Ebay 'Rossi' AC/DC and it's awesome. Don't even bother with DC if you ever intend to weld aluminium.
                                as short as possible
