the game has changed. to be decently fast in 2wd now, you need ~ 220-250 hp and sub 1000 kg without crew. 1250 kg is the minimum I reckon one of these will weigh caged, sumpguarded, plated etc. Based on the S13/S14s that are around that weight, you'd need 320 hp +, and a driveline to cope.....

the white whale will need 400 + hp and an unlimited tyre budget to be competitive at 1500 kg (and a decent driver!) ...

And Rowds, these things are not too dissimilar to the RX8 you loved! They had a pretty big build up before the launch I recall! Just enjoy it for what it is cunties!
      Looks at garage.. doh

I agree, they are a good thing and something that needed to be built, certainly credit where it's due. Just ugly and underpowered IMHO. I'm guessing the block is not a standard Subaru bolt pattern hence why no one has slapped a STI WRX engine in one. I do have images of a nice smallish all alloy V8 fitting in one. Shit the engine bay should be wide enough. The gearbox might be an issue but from reports the diff is a good unit from the IS. Will certainly be interesting what the tuners and cashed up buyers do with them.

        3. Most people get excited at the prospect of the above, especially when press reviews seem positive
        4. Some people completely froth at the mouth & buy three without having seen them
        5. Some vocally denounce it because it's too popular/not powerful enough/too expensive/too cheap/"not as good as the original 86"/too heavy/too ugly/there are not enough/there are too many/they don't like the shade of blue it is/the wheels are too small/the wheels are too big/it doesn't sound good enough/they don't get it/"it's not as good as my Supra/MX5/Skyline/Soarer/S15/F40/V12 Liberty/Zil/GSXR1000"/etc
        6. Most normal people remain interested & look forward to test driving one when they are available as they nicely fill a gap in the market that has remained for some time.
        Troof!

I'm point 6 - interested, but not to the hysteria point that a sudden price announcement seems to have generated. Its only a good deal if its something you wanted/needed anyway

And further context - a mid eighties 911 is around the same weight and power (albeit more torque).....and was considered a fast sports car

But I think we are stuck in the past there - this is 2012 where a family hack is nearly 200kw and were lucky to have 100 in the eighties. Your 950kg 80kw rally car would get hosed these days :D

I find it amusing someone with an R32 is worried about this car being underpowered. I think the point of this car is there is more to it than just straight line speed.

Rowds, Nick et al .. You cunts have it all wrong.

Any production car that has headrests specifically designed that when turned around accommodate the use of a helmet and the rear cargo area designed to have enough room for a set of wheels with race rubber on them is fucking cool.

Sure, It could do with a little more power but it's light, it apparently handles brilliantly and unlike the MX5 doesn't (yet) have the penis enthusiast stigma.

Leaseplan website has this to say..
                  Term 36 months.
                  Distance per year 20,000klms
                  Annual salary 130,000pa

                  Monthly rental 1,417

That's with no trade and no deposit just using the "affordability calculator" so if you chucked a few grand at it and leased 28k of the car it's 1,192 per month. If you also put in some post tax cash you would be better off.

I put a deposit down at my local dealer for a black or white one, whichever they can get first. They've got 3 allocated: Red GT Apr/12 that will be their demo, black GTS May/12 that's available and a black GT July/12. There's also a white GT allocated for Aus that hasn't been sold yet so he's trying to swap for that one as my first preference.

I thought deposit upfront on a novated lease was a no-no.

There's one downstairs right now. The ad agency in the bldg has the Toyota account, so I guess one of their bigwigs was lent one to play with. Nice looking car, more compact and shorter than I woulda thought from looking at the pictures. It's a GTS with black on black interior (with red stitching).
