it has DI and gets 4 stars for economy and emissions. Check check.
Jobs.. Maybe one or 2 indirectly. not really a requirement for COTY though.
It gets 5 stars for safety. Check

i can see why it won COTY
Biased aside if the Wheels criteria would have allowed the new B250 with the DI 2.0 litre motor...also scored 36.78 out of 37 for ANCAP it might have made the final....will be interesting what gets up next year with alot of new cars coming out.

If it was my vote I would have gone the Volt only for the vision going forward....the 86/BRZ is just a reboot of the MX-5 with a fixed roof and the added extra of a low RRP.

Volt is too expensive, and from the owner & driver's point-of-view it's mechanical similarity to the diesel-electric railway locomotive (as became popular from the 1920's through to 1950's) is very much overwhelmed by it's price. It doesn't achieve anything that a 1/3 cheaper Prius doesn't achieve.

Car enthusiasts, of the variety that usually staff car magazines, would be among the list of people who do.
Frankly, a helluva lot of people who buy cars do too. Plonk your mother(*) in two cars that do pretty-much everything identically except that one's more fun than the other; she'll choose the fun one(**).

(*) Note assumption that your mother gives as little shit about cars as mine does.
(**) Based on sample-of-one where my mother bought the noisier but better-handling & gruntier Mazda3 over the "safer choice" Corolla.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Build quality? Is this the same car that multiple owners are having engine issues with around the world?

A very small percentage of owners in the first couple of build months got CEL's and this was fixed with a flash. Lets keep it in perspective here.

Really? I thought it was far broader than that. From what I have skimmed from sites its far worse than just needing a reflash.

You have to remember that the 86 is the first new car a bunch of Gen X's have owned. The two issues are

              - CEL/rough idle/stalling - caused by the setting of the oil check valve on the VVTI actuator, fixed by a flash

              - chirping/crickets - doesn't cause any actual mechanical problem but the sound is annoying, caused by a washer in the HPFP which gets noisy when hot. Far more prevalent in the US where they have higher ethanol content fuel but if you do get it they'll replace the pump

Yep, i recall hearing all cars from around October build on have been redesigned so the CEL and pump issues are no longer a problem

But yeah the whinging was loud from the 2% of owners who had these issues

Internet means we hear about what the retarded stupids do in the USA and think it's relevant to people who don't put their 1985-spec auto car in drive, try to accelerate before it's properly engaged, accelerate more, and by the time the slushbox is properly engaged they've got their foot flat & are complaining about how their Audi has "unintended acceleration design flaws".

There's some old saying about glass VW owners not growing stones or some-such, isn't there? :p

I noticed mine was chirping when I opened up the bonnet to jump start another car last night, hadn't noticed it before with the bonnet down. A quick search showed it's likely because I use United 100 Octane. No real problem, will get Toyota to replace the pump at the next service.

Well, apparently it takes a few days to get the gladwrap off one of these things:

I should just get them to deliver it wrapped. I could open it on christmas day.

Good stuff mate! Red is the best colour IMO.

The red ones, they go faster.

Just be prepared for standard issue Toyota red to pink colour shift over the next 10 years or more

                            I have owned a red AW11 for 12 years now. I'm assuming it's improved since the 80s?
