I'm saying they could have made something equivalent and better than say an S15 for around the same money. They (s14a/s15) were/are OK looking cars, put some wheels and tidy up the ride height and they looked better again. A few cheap mods and it handles and can make bulk more power than stock too. It's not rocket science. I understand Toybaru must have stayed NA to capture the P plater market given they seem to be able to drive 40-50k new cars. But for someone who is looking for the next S15 for example you have to spend bulk on adding a turbo etc as people are doing to make it what it should have been so they are spending the cash anyway but putting the thing pretty near the limit at the same time. Is the 147kw standard on the limits of power to weight rules etc? Why not some more cubes if must be NA?Hide yo' wife!!!

You know that Nissan nearly went broke don't you, with the later S chassis cars losing heaps. Those days are obviously gone, comparing a S14 say to a 86 is pointless.Richard's DatsunZ lappin LakesidZ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47OSh...&feature=g-upl

It's better than an S15 in many (most?) ways, yet is cheaper despite it being 10 years later.Originally posted by Don Johnson View PostI'm saying they could have made something equivalent and better than say an S15 for around the same money. About the only thing it's not better at is not being turbocharged & hence not allowing boost-up power upgrades for cheapskates.
And I'll be surprised if a force-fed one doesn't come along in the next couple of years; they've got to give themselves somewhere to go.Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

the ft86 makes very similar power to the s15 stock. Toyota gives no shits for hectick bleed valve modifiers!
What they care about is milking whats left of their "reliable sports car" image they have left and using a formula they had success with in the 80's i.e. lightweight, RWD, cheap, fun and underpowered. The ft86 ticks all the boxes and this is why it has been such a success.Originally posted by BabalouieGeez we're a bunch of softcocks...we have a 911 and we're obsessing over non-functional ducts and indicator colours

The world has changed a decade on. Fuel economy is almost top of the priority list for new cars, so I highly doubt any new car released these days has massive potential for more power.Originally posted by Don Johnson View PostI'm saying they could have made something equivalent and better than say an S15 for around the same money. They're the same price as a civic or a fucking VW polo. Decent build quality+power+RWD starts on the wrong side of 60k. IE the new BMW M135i thing. Even a homosexual MX5 is over 45 grand these days.

Did they really sell that many AE86's?Originally posted by vet 180 View PostWhat they care about is milking whats left of their "reliable sports car" image they have left and using a formula they had success with in the 80's i.e. lightweight, RWD, cheap, fun and underpowered. Popularity was post-mortem, with the drifting fad's arrival, wasn't it?
Doubt a BMW would out-reliability an 86?Originally posted by gat5rodeo View PostThey're the same price as a civic or a fucking VW polo. Decent build quality+power+RWD starts on the wrong side of 60k. 730,000+ just in the U.S. They always sold well, they just became *cool* after. Same deal as the mx5 (they always sold well)....just without the after cool.Originally posted by Forg View PostDid they really sell that many AE86's?

Must just have been here they barely sold any. With the 4AC in 'em, and yet costing more than a better-handling (in standard form as they were delivered here) & just generally better Corolla Twin Cam, no wonder.Originally posted by vet 180 View Post730,000+ just in the U.S. They always sold well, they just became *cool* after. Peak power yes, what about area under the curve and that elusive thing the 86 dosent have. Torque.Originally posted by vet 180 View Post

Does anybody that owns a 86 actually think it feels like a 15 second car?
I could live happily with the steering feel and knowing its a bargain for what it is but id be over the power by the end of the dealers driveway.
Is that S15 with the 2J in it still on Carsales?I climbed Mt Druitt

Yeah, because Toyota and Subaru base their designs on the arse backwards regulations of a country that will buy maybe 2% of total production.Originally posted by Don Johnson View PostI understand Toybaru must have stayed NA to capture the P plater market given they seem to be able to drive 40-50k new cars.
