Thing is, i cant remember being able to 'delicately balance the car with the throttle'. The brz didnt have enough power for that. It had enough power to brutally clutch kick it out of a corner after a trail braked crossed up entry like a lunatic who still has 4wd to save him, and counter steer to suit. But it was full throttle. None of this feathering to adjust the line shit. If you lifted, it was tankslapper time. You can get them into some sweet slides, sure. But you control them with the wheel, not the boot, unlike any other rwd with some poke I've driven that you genuinely throttle steer.

So unless you're on a 5m wide race track with a huge flowing corner, i call bullshit. And if you are, a brz/86 is a slow cumbucket to waste the tracks time with. As a single lane, down a mountain road, its brilliant. But there is no 'delicately balancing on the right foot'. Just lots of boot in for wheelspin, and less for none.

Also a very good chance I'm an average driver, and never bothered to explore the delicate nature of a 200hp 1400kg under tyred car. Likely actually.

Has someone mentioned that these things need a 1LR-GUE yet?

Almost every cunt who peddles one is just as fast or faster with the auto.

Remember 50% of drivers are below average.
Well, auto STI you lose 57nm of torque, but i do see your point

Who the fuck would buy an auto. Yes there slow as fuck with a manual but an auto is fucking useless.
I had a manual BRZ booked at the Nurburgring. The bloke who had it before me lunched the box so I had to take an auto.

It was pretty good to be honest. I'd rather a manual for sure, but I was surprised that it was actually half decent.

yep agree, when I went from (manualised) auto to manual in my track bunky it was surprisingly difficult to crack a new pb, and even then it was by fuckall... still pretty crap at heel-toe'ing so in the auto where you would left-foot brake everywhere it was easier to be quick

In BRZ especially with better tyres its just a matter of knwing when to feed the power in on tight corners, after that its just foot to the floor and whatever oppo lock is needed, pretty simple

why the fuck would you buy an auto BRZ? unless, y'know you've got aids in your bum. driving an auto isnt 99% better in all other circumstances, it's 100% boring in all other circumstances. if you want to just cruise around in an auto that's fine, they make hyundais for that. i don't see how an auto BRZ is any better at tailsliding than a manual is. sure if you lift off you go round... so just dont lift off. its like driving a clio sport.

Because you're too thick to understand that driving a manual in stop start traffic is gay as fuck, and gets old very quickly. The auto is a good thing.

And in a manual, what can you do with 200hp and 1400kg that you cant do in an auto? put foot flat out and hold a slide? Auto has torque multiplication, it does it effortlessly and a lot more competently.

I'd go with an arbitrary figure of 98 in every 100 drivers would be slower with a manual around a technical section of road due to total clusterfuck of feet going everywhere, mismatched revs, wrong gear, focussing on slowing with a gearbox instead of the big middle pedal etc. What feels boy racer and fast, is often jerky, with sudden movements and changes in weight etc. Auto lets you keep two hands on the wheel and use the brakes for what theyre intended for, and its always in the right gear in the brz/86 for tail out fun when you stomp on it. The manual needs either lots of road speed, or lots of clutch kick to do the same. And the whole point of an 86 is fun at lower road speeds.

My ownership experience taught me one thing, I can have as much fun as a 4wd, tail happy, 6 speed, 300hp 1500kg wagon on ohlins coilovers and R comp tyres at like half the pace with half the required stopping distance and double the margin for error should I run out of talent. Its a flawless and excellent concept when you dont care that a bog stock s13 could probably out run you*.

Noone said the brz or 86 as a manual is worse at slidey fun than an auto, just that the auto is no worse than the manual, with the added benefit of being trivial to dawdle along at 3kph in bumper to bumper traffic.

Also for what its worth, I'd take an auto if I buy one again, simply for the strength over the manual. Auto's are now solidly proven to handle bulk torbo powahs and protect the rods from driveline shock in the brz/86. For my intended uses (highway cruise, traffic, commute, mountain runs, roundabout shenanigans, offramp dorifto) the auto would do everything the manual does.

Not saying auto is better either, just that its no worse as people seem to think. Ive driven em both and thats my take at least.

Cheapest entry price is in a manual GT. Next cheapest is auto GT 86 which does not have LSD therefore gay.

You do when give no fucks for xenons or cc aircon and just want the cheapest entry to use as base to modify.

Also equating 86 to Lexcen is simply moronic. Toyota has contributed much more to this car than a badge.

For a start they have actively promoted it unlike Subaru. Shit you can't even buy one at a dealer, so afraid is Suabru Oz of tarnishing the all wheel drive halo they have created.

I think people are forgetting how much longer the gearing is in an automatic, 1:1 is 5th gear on the manual and 4th gear on the auto, it does make a noticeable difference to acceleration and on twisty roads where you'll always have the right gear in the manual you can be between gears in the auto. In regards to traffic, I daily drive my 86 every day in traffic and not once have I thought 'I'd rather be in an auto'. The clutch is light and very easy to balance, it's a nice gearshift, I'm not sure why anyone would find the manual a chore in traffic unless they were struggling with driving a manual top begin with.

In regards to balancing the car the best example I could give is driving up the old road. For the people that know it there are a series of long hairpins on the section heading north between the hawkesbury river and mt white. In the 86 if you go through them at around 100-110kmh you'll get to the point where the front end is just starting to push, breathe on the throttle a bit and it will tuck the nose in and start to push the rear wide, basically the handling is approachable enough that you can toy with the slip angles of the front and rear tyres without being at huge risk of getting it wrong and spearing into the scenery. If I compare to my old S14 I was going through those corners at the same speed but it was much more difficult to balance the car at that transition point as the slip angles were so much narrower and the difference between fun and dead was so much finer that for me at least it was something I could only really do at the track. This isn't about getting the car sideways with tyres blazing, it's about toying with the balance of the car when the tyres are out on the edge of their grip.
