So took my girly underpowered not a sports car to Phillip Island today for the first time! Best time was 2:05.4672 in the middle of the day when it was dry. Car is 100% stock, 16" prius tyres and all. I'm never getting a professional racing gig but was fucking top fun all the same. Only other visit to PI was in my Golf R (OEM RE050's, DBA4000/DS2500's, swaybars and flash tune) where I did a 1:59. The 86 has less power, no torque, no awd and I had to change gears myself but it was 11ty times more fun.

An interesting thing I noticed was the way the factory TC/ESP would brake a rear wheel in the fast sweepers like turn 3. Wasn't really unsettling just odd the first few times and I think it happened less the smoother I got through there. I think this is the one people do the "pedal dance" trick to disable. But IMO the VSC Sport mode wasn't intrusive unless you drove like a retard and in the wet sessions it probably saved my arse at turn 1.

All in all very impressed with the car and had a lot of fun. Easily more time in it but I don't have the Vettel complex so really don't give a fuck.

As for the can't drive a manual as a daily, when did people become such princesses. Clutch is light as fark, gearbox is nice. Its practically a subconscious effort.

What else? Every single hypersupercar is an auto I can think off without googling.

Everything is a compromise. Any new ferrari, R35, lamborghini, etc are all auto's. GT-RS porkas are the only thing that springs to mind as a true sports car.

Everything is a compromise for NVH, comfort, road manners, and not dealing with clunky cumbersome manuals.

And for the record, I've never owned a single auto car in the last decade.
As I've mentioned in my post, I was refering to an auto as those with a torque converter. All other cars are manual (even flappy paddle activated gearboxes).
Mercedes are the only 'sports' car manufacturer that make auto cars (I use the term sports losely).

As for 'true' sports cars, we are now debating semantics. I rate all the cars you've mentioned as sports cars.

Yeah, in drag racing. Which is exactly what the 86 was NOT built for. Auto + anything that involves a corner is gay as fuck.

I used to have your exact opinion.

Then I got lazy. I cant think of any time I'd prefer a manual turbo brz over an auto turbo (which is the only condition i'd own another), aside from the sweet handbrakies.

          .
Did you hold the TC button down for 3sec or just ran in VSC Sport? I found Sport still cut in more than I liked whereas I've yet to feel anything happening with TC completely off as above. So far not found any need to do the pedal dance and I've had it pretty sideways...

the 'pedal dance' one you don't really need to use - vsc sport mode is actually pretty intrusive I found - there is a middle mode which leaves ABS on but turns all 'rescue' aids to do with traciton off - just old the traciton off button down for 3 seconds while stationary and you're essentially in track mode.

The difference went from 6% to 14%.....so yes I would give a shit about that if track car most definitely!. For street car? not so much and could tune out most of the impact of the extra weight for street duties.

It's also the point that yanks never get tired of telling you how you can LS swap just about anything and it'll come out at the same weight or lighter... They were saying that about the MX-5 swaps ffs

Yeah I know about holding TC off but didn't want to bin a 2000km car being the hack I am. Either way, didn't find VSC sport intrusive.

Aiming to go back in a month so I'll try relaxing the aids and compare.

I didn't realise how soft many PFers were these days. Bitching about a manual when the clutch is as light as a feather? FFS

You don't need to be stationary to do the hold down for 3s thing (feels more like 5s), it works while moving (even though the manual states you must be stationary). And the rear goes out very progressively, it's not a car that snaps back on you - just don't go panicking lock to lock P-player style.

if your going that far with your car (IE circuit racing) theres heaps of shit you could do to get that figure back.

if its a street/skid car.. no fucks given

Yes auto's are fantastic for corners. Get on brakes, turn in, start to feed in throttle, 4th gear because still going 70 with small amount of throttle, get foot flat to the floor, no drive for 2 seconds as auto jerkily kicks down to second gear at full throttle, 1500rpm of acceleration and then 3rd.

Manual car, get on brakes, change to 3rd, accelerate smoothly out of corner.
