You are aware that the ISF box is just a conventional torque converter auto? So if the 86 box is based on it then it must also be a conventional torque converter auto that has no mechanical relationship to the 6-speed manual....

So the manual is based on an auto from the isf. Okay then....Originally posted by Deceiver View PostSo Toyota were full of shit when they ran training for dealership staff and said it's the same box (not identical, but based on ISF box with less cogs)?
Cool, good to know the internet is here to correct the manufacturer.

"Based", that's right, not "identical".Originally posted by perthdrivers.jpg View PostYou are aware that the ISF box is just a conventional torque converter auto? I don't need to ... part of the involvement in driving is in getting it all right. Take away the gearbox, that takes away enough of a proportion of the fun to make a car like an 86 a bit pointless; unless it's been bought as a shopping trolley 2dr.Originally posted by ToddW View PostHave you driven the auto?
Hang on ... you really weren't kidding?Originally posted by Deceiver View Post"Based", that's right, not "identical".Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Perhaps you should before you make your mind up. I wasn't all that keen but after driving it I changed my mind.Originally posted by Forg View PostI don't need to ...
Also I can confirm that the ISF box is a conventional auto as is the 86 and bears no resemblance to the 86 manual.
Under steer is hitting the wall with your front end. Over steer is hitting the wall with your tail end. Horsepower if how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how much of the wall you take with you after you hit it.

This is my understanding also.Originally posted by Sturmovik View Post86 uses the same box as the IS250 (A960E), not the ISF box (8 speed - AA80E)

You might need to have a chat to the service blokes on Monday morning before you further embarrass yourself.Originally posted by Deceiver View PostSo Toyota were full of shit when they ran training for dealership staff and said it's the same box (not identical, but based on ISF box with less cogs)?

Yep. Makes no sense to put an auto made for a V8 behind a 2.0 4 cyl.Originally posted by ToddW View PostThis is my understanding also.
Fwiw I have driven the auto and it was a big step back in the fun stakes and it is noticeably slower from the longer gearing. That said I'm not one of those people who find driving a manual in traffic a chore so it was a very easy choice for me.

I bought the auto for my wife. All I'm saying is that it is a pretty good effort from Toyota. Not a manual but not bad at all. Same as my ISF - auto but pretty fucking awesome for an auto.Originally posted by IMOA View PostYep. Makes no sense to put an auto made for a V8 behind a 2.0 4 cyl.

It's only a chore when you have the phone in one hand and the bigmac in the other....Originally posted by IMOA View PostYep. Makes no sense to put an auto made for a V8 behind a 2.0 4 cyl.

Yeah nah, I never got people complaining about manual's in city driving. Now if you have a really heavy and grabby clutch (like mine) different story, sometimes very embarrassing stalling the fucker, but the factory clutch and 6 speed are a peach to drive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_86#EngineeringThe FR-S, 86, and BRZ are offered with two 6-speed transmissions built by Aisin, a manual gearbox and an automatic transmission which is modified from the Lexus IS 250. The automatic uses a traditional wet torque converter design, but its software has been engineered to mimic the response of a dual-clutch gearbox.
Pay more attention in class next time. Auto box the same as a manual other than a software flash fkn el oh el.

Just when we were talking about clueless dealers too, the secret to good comedy is the timing :D

I have driven mine in heavy traffic, it was fine. Only once did it give me the shits and that was after a 17 hour day of really hard work, it was not just my legs but my whole body that was buggered.Originally posted by MZ21 View PostIt's only a chore when you have the phone in one hand and the bigmac in the other....
