So Evo mag finally tested the BRZ. Put it up against a 370z, an MX5, a Renault Megane trophy.

They loved the chassis blah blah, but the engine in general (power torque and noise) are a major issue and is a real elephant in the room. It came a distant last out of the 4. And is just too expensive, even in this crowd. Nothing new here I realise, it's been done to death in this thread, and every thread ever. But yeah, very obvious to me now that they've made a big mistake with this engine now, I'm going back to dreaming about second hand caymans and lotii instead for the same money.

Oh, and the megane absolutely blitzed it on a racetrack, took 5 seconds off it!

        some quotes:

        On the track....
"We so wanted the BRZ to deliver, to make a stand for rear drive, but it misses the target by a mile. It's not agile and adjustable on track, and it's not much fun either. The MX5 would lap a little slower, but it demonstrates perfetly that a modestly show rear-drive car can be hugely involving and entertaining. Makes you wonder if the Subaru engineers have even driven one".

        on the road...
"The BRZ does display some of it's innate hooligan if you throw it at a corner on the brakes, but you need to be mighty fast to stay on top of it and very committed on the throttle to stop it flicking back the other way. And the more you seek out that elusive moment of magic, the more the lack of torque frustrates and the faster you go until you find yourself in a vicious circle of cheek-puffing effort and clumsy provocation, all to no avail".

I really don't want to come across as being a fanboy and defensive of this, but its kinda weird that this goes against all of the video reviews that we've seen. Throughout this thread there have been heaps of remarks, by people who have driven these cars, that the engine is shit etc. I think I've seen and read every review and I can't remember any complaining about the engine. I know a lot of the reviews would have been reviewed by Toyota and Subaru and no doubt a lot of them were paid by the companies....

I love EVO reviews, but this is really surprising.

I know we all won't get to drive one, but really, people just need to drive these things before writing them off.

John- finally an honest review against the competition- its what we all expected, realistically !

Kev- things often seem ok in isolation - but put whatever it is up against some competition and flaws become obvious

1998 MX5 - Ohlins DFV coilovers, Roll bar,15 x7.5 Konig Litespeeds, Mania Intake
            2014 Colorado LT - Oversized Whitegoods. Kid/bike/track hack/horse hauler.

Thats a good point I guess, all of the other reviews that I've come across have been just the 86, around a track, with an emphasis on getting sideways.

John: Any chance of scanning the article so we can read over it.

p.s. I'm a Toyota Fanboy so clearly the fact this was the BRZ is the reason it went so crap

I have been a bit sus on the engine since I we saw it was 150kw. Lowish redline on a 2 litre NA? I am wondering how much in 'reserve' there is. IE, sell at high dollar to all the super keen punters to recover the R&D and also check reliability of new chassis/engine. Next revision gets a modest boost in all areas and becomes the one you want? I was assuming (hoping) we would see a 8500rpm 180kw screamer like the 4age we all love.

Remember there has been a fair sort of discussion around keeping the aftermarket alive so maybe a bit like the original 86 the basics are there but its hardly inspiring in factory form.

It's enough though. Given the premise of the whole project was to produce an affordable RWD sports car, both Toyota and Subaru delivered on that... comparisons against rival (and not so rival, 350Z lol) cars notwithstanding. All the hype as the new AE86 came about after it was established Toyota was actually heavily involved... before that it was simply known as some test mule based on a Subaru Legacy driving the rear wheels. So from from a marketing perspective I think it's raised the bar a little too high for the 86 considering the hardware that's been available (ie: no Toyota engine or chassis) so the result was always going to be compromised. Still, it's a start and as you say, the next revision/next full model change will probably give people what they want.

Do the Subaru and Toyota run the same rubber? It almost sounds like the BRZ is running softer tyres from the description.

if so, imagine how off the pace an 86 would be running the "low grip" Prius tyres!
I still want one, but thinking now I just want one eventually, i.e. when a better one is released...

                        Its hard

Buy early and maybe get a nice light version like the mx5's were
Or buy late and have a more refined less problem prone like say a mini (compared as it was a completely new platform too).

                        I still want one too

I guess in every other positive review of the 86 they tested a manual?

Yep, never seen a review of an auto.

Why the hell would they compare an auto in any of those types of cars (auto mx5, ultra , auto 370z, extra , Megane auto )???

Lets wait for a better review using a manual....

The manual would still be connected to the same dog of a motor...
