Suitability of TPMS for race tyres

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Sytems like the Gates Corp one.

They only seem to be advertised for 4 x 4 purposes.

I am by nature a very lazy man and the thought of monitoring pressures from the cabin seems more attractive than walkng around the car ten times a day with a gauge that is going to cost me $100 anyway. So the $300 being asked for these things seemed reasonable.

The other bonus was actually seeing pressures live.

Would they survive on a race tyre? Anyone using them for that purpose?

    Cheers

i reckon it would be awesome.

most of the sensors measure temp up to 150degC as well as basic pressures.

so i assume the sensor will take this no worries?

how hot would it get in there i wonder?

Check the price of individual spare senders and the ability to reprogram the sender poistions.

You are bound to have blow out at some point which could well destroy a sensor and your likely to move the rims around the car and have spares that you cycle through. Great idea but no point if the data is confusing to read or useless to you.

Steve Glenney uses one on his Targa RX-8. He never looks at it during a special stage, but he said it was awesome for getting his tyres up to the correct temp/pressure before entering a stage, as well as checking that they didn't over-pressure once he's crossed the flying finish.

From a co-driver's point of view I rate them..... it would mean I wouldn't have to keep jumping in and out of the car all of the time to check pressures by hand!

I have one of these: http://www.jegs.com/i/Orange+Electro...P409S/10002/-1

          Spare sensors are only US$35.

I havnt had a chance to test it out on the track yet, but should be a good thing. Several other people i know use them with no issues.

Hmmm, sounds like a good idea, you can get the info immediately while the tyres are still at working levels.

you will be surprized how long it doesn't take them to get up to temp and how long it takes to drop back down

They sound like an awesome idea, but. I seem to recall seeing them mentioned in the cams manual as not being allowed though. Might have been for race series though.

Supertaxi's won't allow them or automatic tyre pressure adjustment devices.

Saved me the trouble of having more arguments for both those.
