if you don't mind a hairdressers car i think the convertable hardtop mercs are really nice. mate in uk had one, you can get them cheap cheap and loved it more than his focus

The Seppo's all rant & rave about them, but I suspect they're focusing on quoted engine power alone.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

If your were even considering an NB get an SE Turbo. Otherwise the NC model with power retractable roof (as above) if you don't want to fuck around with a manual softop/hardtop.

How tall are you? Probably more of an issue in an NB MX5 than width. For use everyday the NC MX5 would be a good thing, more room than the NA or NB models.

There is no difference between an NA or an NB in that regard. Both can be raised or lowered from the driver's seat with one hand. Unless you have a rollbar....which you should.

                    5'10".

Do all NCs have a power roof?

My cursory homework suggests NCs are a step back from NB in terms of driving pleasure, a bit ho-hum unless the latest model. No?

Does the roll-bar make a noticeable difference to torsional rigidity?

Only if it's on a pre NA8 as from 94 they all had a steel bar between the seatbelt towers. A full cage is a different matter. A rollbar and lowers the gay factor a lot though.

                        only the hard tops.

The roof in ours can go up or down in about 3 seconds. it's literally one lever and throw it over your shoulder/pull it up.

I lived with an NB Mx5 (10AE) for 6 months before it gave me the shits.

                            Pros:
                            * Handling - Brilliant car to drive around the bends, Mx5's are known for their cheap thrills and the car I had came with some nice stuff from the factory (bilsteins etc.)
                            * Fun factor - Open top driving brings a new dynamic to the driving experience
                            * Decent fuel economy - Frugal enough to make the daily trek to work cheap enough
                            * Easy to park
                            * Comfortable driving position - I'm 5'10", 86kg, normal build... was very comfortable for me to drive. That said, the back of my head was awfully close to the half cage.

                            Cons:
                            * Limited storage space - Boot was ok for basics, but too shallow for a suitcase for a weekend away.
                            * Difficult to get into with the roof up - Mine had to be parked on a hill at home, made it very hard for even me to get into with the roof up... and I'm normal build, flexible, 5'10")
                            * Poor visibility - My eye line when sitting in the drivers seat was the exact same height as the door sill of most small hatches, in particular the new Swifts (keep in mind, the car was at stock ride height)

Overall, I'd definitely consider buying one again (albiet, an SE or SP turbo)... but only as a second car as the practicality just isn't there for a daily. If you want a fun and practical car for the commute to work, just got a basic hot hatch IMO

Short list is all over the shop, basically $5K to $30K and everything in between. Part of me wants an E30 rag top, another thinks an NB MX-5 would be fun, or even an old W107 Merc. Nopics reckons an E46 3 is the go.

Anyone out there actually use a convertible for a daily? I'm constantly seeing people in 'verts with the roof up and could never quite work out why. Does the novelty wear off? Do other drivers give you grief? Is theft a real issue with an open/soft top? Lack of boot space? Is there other shit to consider that I'm missing?
                              fuck your a faggot...

How did it compare to say.... a Barina..
which one would be able to take off from the lights better due to being able to control wheelspin?
