Pros:
* Handling - Brilliant car to drive around the bends, Mx5's are known for their cheap thrills and the car I had came with some nice stuff from the factory (bilsteins etc.)
* Fun factor - Open top driving brings a new dynamic to the driving experience
* Decent fuel economy - Frugal enough to make the daily trek to work cheap enough
* Easy to park
* Comfortable driving position - I'm 5'10", 86kg, normal build... was very comfortable for me to drive. That said, the back of my head was awfully close to the half cage.
Cons:
* Limited storage space - Boot was ok for basics, but too shallow for a suitcase for a weekend away.
* Difficult to get into with the roof up - Mine had to be parked on a hill at home, made it very hard for even me to get into with the roof up... and I'm normal build, flexible, 5'10")
* Poor visibility - My eye line when sitting in the drivers seat was the exact same height as the door sill of most small hatches, in particular the new Swifts (keep in mind, the car was at stock ride height)
Overall, I'd definitely consider buying one again (albiet, an SE or SP turbo)... but only as a second car as the practicality just isn't there for a daily. If you want a fun and practical car for the commute to work, just got a basic hot hatch IMO
truth.
was a fantastic weekend car, got a little old on weekdays, stuck in traffic etc.
My gf at the time ended up getting the shits with climbing in and out of it in heels with the roof up - and parking it all day in the sun at her office for a year did the rag top no good at all, ended up tearing.
I'd have one in a second again. I loved it.
If I bought another one, I reckon I'd cage/roll bar it and do an engine transplant of some sort.
economy was off the chart, did a few road trips in it and the a/c was always freaking Icelandic and it got 600kms out of like 38L.
When we went away for weekends, we didn't need many clothes, so luggage wasn't an issue.
I want another one.

Can't beat a decent convertible as a daily.
I used my Datto roadster as a daily on and off and My Elise was my daily for the last 6 years. I still drive it whenever I reasonably can and will probably piss off my recently acquired Golf GTI because the Lotus is nicer and better daily.
The Datto and the Lotus probably spent 90% of their time with the roof down but I have secure parking at home and work. Both cars are feel good and fun. If I was buying a car in the original posters price range I'd look closely at an S2000 over an MX5 but both are good.If you dig a hole and it is in the wrong place, digging it deeper isn't going to help.

Fucking NSFW warning up now...
We bought nopics a late model MR2 as a daily, has the funny sequential gearbox (Toyota's really bad version of a SMG?). She manages to get it around every day no issue, but don't expect to carry anything more than a laptop bag in it!!
Good little car to throw around as well, like a good woman it is great with the top off, especially at night....
Have been for a strap in 3 seperate Boxsters lately, I would definately go for one of them if the budget permitted (has to be an S or PDK sport chrono!)Find your Freedom

Nopics has pointed out tonight that I have 3 children, and at some point should expect to have to drive more than one of them around at a time...damn her female logic!
So - a four seater is the go. What are my options? 3 Series is the obvious one that comes to mind - any other contenders? (I'd like to rule out SAABs because they're just too odd for me).
Cheap and fun E30? E36 in the mid-teen$$$? Blow everything I have on the best E46 I can afford? My budget can't really extended past $30K.
Thanks for all the advice, please keep it coming.Originally posted by BillzillaRemember - Ignorance in the true sense of the word does not equal stupidity.
