How gay are the 996 tiptronics?

So I have driven cars with paddle shift and was nothing wrong with that, felt good and did what i wanted. I wasn't pushing it but seemed ok. I have never driven a good tiptronic to date that I remember. I have driven audi s5's and similar cars with tiptronic, but cant seem to remember if i liked it or not. When i think of tiptronic gearboxes, flashes of friends crappy celica's and similar wannabe sport car driving experiences enter my mind. I guess bad experiences leave more an impression than good ones.

So I guess I am asking what is a 996 tiptronic gearbox like to drive? Is there any differences accross models or years. Ie is the turbo tiptronic different to the carrera or did they change after at any particular year say 2003 onwards? I have also seen you can get paddle shift kits for the 996. Are they any good?

edit: Have found this during google searching; all 996 Turbos are Tip S - the Tip S (Mercedes-Benz sourced) box was introduced specifically for the 996 Turbo as the non-S version couldn't handle the torque.

The Tip S box only uses the torque convertor in first gear and for gear changes... Once a gear is selected a clutch locks up the torque convertor, so you are effectively driving a manual when in Manual mode

Still interested in peoples opinions, especially regarding rev matching and how it behaves, how fun it is to drive etc.

Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

I've driven an automatic Mazda6 with the +/- shifter ... same thing, didn't excite, wouldn't pay Porsche money for a Mazda6. Same as a new automatic Skoda, really.

If you were snogging a dude whilst jerking off another dude in the middle of a gay orgy, well, that would be less gay than a non-manual Porsche of any kind.

The trick to driving them fast is to let the computer upshift, but control the downshift yourself, so the engine is always on the boil.

this. i've wondered how much it is to change to manual considering how much cheaper they are tiptronic. for when i actually graduate from $40k redneckin' pushrodness...

considering it's like $8k to change my SSV over, can't imagine the porsche would be any cheaper...
