I've got a previous model dual cab 4x4 hilux. I love it.

Chuck shit in the back to take to the tip, put wood on the roof racks on the canopy, go 4wding.

All in one weekend. So much easier than a trailer at the tip as well. No shitty reversing and getting bogged in mud cause of 2wd (and really crap tyres on a work ute).

After having this for 4 months, I think I'll always have a ute of some sort now.
I survived the patio flooding catastrophe of 2012.

old boy has the Triton GLXR and loves it.Tows the boat and then his 21ft van with ease.
He has done simpson desert and just got back from the cape in it. Oddly enough the old gal is also happy to drive it short distances - ie. the bunnings etc.

He did get some suspension work done on the rear and it has made the ride infinitely better - I think it may have been by Old Man Emu. Can check if anyone is interested.

I wanted him to get the Nav based on the looks - but the all white GLXR with sports canopy, lights and a set of decent tyres has come up looking really nice.

Other than the really shitty ride quality with an empty tray, buying a dual cab ute was the smartest thing I ever did. Great on fuel, constantly has shit in the back of it, great family car.

After removing the load helper spring the ride is much improved, but now it will need an airbag for towing and carrying big loads.

I just went to the dealers and there a few new models coming out soon. Hilux is big $$$$$$. Mazda is keen to flog off there 3.0 turbo diesel bt50 for mid $35,000 for the top spec model-New model coming out in a couple of months. Navara can do $40,000 for the st model. While at holden i got a price for the ss thunder $39,000, and colorado lx-r $36,000 and lt-r $39,990. The new vw starts around the $40,000 mark. Might be worth waiting for the new models to come out to compare.

If you are in anyway serious about a VW, order one now, and be prepared for a good 6mth wait..

Having said that, I'm very happy with mine. It's better on the road than any other ute I've driven or been in.

My old neighbour ordered the vw, and he told me has to wait a few months too. He has a 6-7 year old 2wd bt50 extracab that has travelled only about 30,000km's one owner if anyone is interested.

After reading one of the Saturday morning motoring reports, there are problems with Trader/BT utes and the cruise control.
Dealers have been offering cash back if they feck up, as no real fix coming due to new model arrival.

Current ranger/ bt50 are rubbish. We've had them as work utes for too long. Vauge record ball steering and worlds dumbest 5 speed auto.
Done plenty of k's in current hiluxes and d40's. Both good, hilux could do with a 6 th gear when belting along int the bush. Hilux go much harder. Low 10s to 60 mph and 17.7 quater on iPhone dynolicious. D40 slower by a second and a half or so.
Haven't driven triton yet. Colorado povo pack I drove wasn't that impressive.
Amarok sounds like a nice piece of kit. Check out caradvice.com.au for their review.
I'd never buy a dual cab cause they're crap compromise to drive everyday. But then I have a fleet at work I can borrow one from when I need one, and they are damn handy for heaps of tasks.

200mph- my Nav has done an 18.2 qtr (racechrono with 5 hz GPS) ... not that much slower than a hilux.. :p

Yeah, going a little off topic here ( ok a lot, discussing performance and diesel utes, ha). I found racechrono plus 5hz gps a bit variable for standing start tests. Great for roll on accel though, like 3rd gear 80-120 kph tests etc.
And you're mad doing 160 towing! Dont think I'd have the patience to get the ton towing or not...but I guess science demanded you try.

I was thinking the 2006/7 vz dualcab commodore might be o.k, as it's got the 6.0l motor and 6 speed manual in the SS. Has anyone driven one of these?

I am going to take a look at a vz 6.0 6 speed crewman tmorw. Anyone have a reason to buy the traditional navara 4wd type of thing over one of these. I know fuel will be more, but i don't do too many k's. I don't need a 4wd, just a dualcab ute to lug stuff around and tow a car trailer (1500kg's) with car.

Avoid the current model Ranger and BT50's if you intend on towing. They are insufficiently cooled and suffer badly from heat related performance issues when towing.

Given your level of skills however, you could quite easily upgrade the intercooler and move it up to the area behind the main grille for more airflow.
