The closest I've been to owning one is hiring one for 10 days on my last holiday. After 10 minutes we called it a Great Ball of Shit because that's exactly what it was. At very low speeds it would step the backend out over rutted roads, had absolutely no power, and the aircon at full speed was about as strong a breeze as you'd get out of your freezer - ie nothing, the manual box was like stirring a bowl of porridge and the interior had already started falling apart after only 2000km's.

They're shit because they're built to a price not a standard, they are cheap for a reason.

Well D22s are a ten year old design, the dual airbag models still score triple what the Great Walls do.

I think you will only find the Great Walls exceeding on safety if you compare airbag Great Wall to 15+ year old, non-airbag Japanese.

      This is telling.
Compare '08 D22 (which while it has bags, is still the same cab as it had in 2001)

The Navara scored 5.57 out of 16 in the offset crash test. The passenger compartment held its shape reasonably well, except for pedal movement and floor deformation.
      Great Wall V240
The V240 scored 2.36 out of 16 in the offset crash test. The passenger compartment did not hold its shape well.
Neither is very safe, but the V240 (and the SA220) are still much less safe than the rest.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe, and from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip-malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moments lost in time; gone like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die.

I could load up on laxatives, take an epic shit, stick 4 wheels on it, and it would be better than a Great Wall.

here's fucken thing... they are $23,990 from ateco

they are sold day in day out in any 3rd world shithole for well under $10k USD... so ateco have a pretty hefty cut

                so what you say?

what i'm saying is that there's less than $10k USD of truck in your $24k truck... so if they're making money on $10k you can bet there's a lot of substandard materials used that wouldn't see the light of day in Thailand (for example)

Anyone considering a great wall is fucking straight out retarded. Without question the cars are rubbish. So the only redeeming feature is price at first glance. However with a brain larger than that of a ant you will realize that with the same money spent on a decent brand car which is a few years old, you will not have the massive depreciation hit PLUS have a MUCH better car. In the end doing this saves you money and gets a better car.

anyone who says i would buy a 15 year old ute compared to the great wall for safety resons is a knob and has a very limited understanding of the ancap rating system

and how massivly shit 15 year old utes were for rash ratings

in saying that the crash rating for the just china ute is still shit but a hell of a lot better than a 15 year old shit ute

Oh as for looks. The other day I saw a a 1980s rodeo and thought to myself, who the fuck would bother paying for a shiny new paintjob on such a POS? Then I realized it was actually a Great Wall. Must have been under a few weeks old as I couldn't see any rust.

If these were around $10'000 new i'd consider them, because that puts them on a parity with other cheap chinese knock off shit, its worth the risk...but as they are there just to expensive.

And I can honestly say I have NEVER bought a car based on safety....ever!

off topic, but you are stupid for not wanting a diesel, they are half the cost to run of the equivalent petrol

ATG23Q, do you intend on taking it off road? dual cab late model 2wd rodeo`s and shit are pretty common, no good for putting 3 lanky mates in the back seat, but midgets or kids will be fine for room.

if you look hard enough you may well find a late model 2wd BT50/ranger etc with ABS,airbags etc etc for about the same money.and you can bet when you go to sell/trade it in it`ll be worth quite a lot more than the great wall will be
                                .
