and yes, diesel is far better. but a 2wd dual cab on LPgas (lowered, turbo kit etc) would be better again, nobody expects it

in saying that the crash rating for the just china ute is still shit but a hell of a lot better than a 15 year old shit ute
The one and only reason it even rates is the airbags. Passenger compartment integrity is worse than stuff from a decade or more ago.

I would rather be in a car that isn't going to lose its seat belts and crumple around my legs like tinfoil.

Certainly not saying buy an old jap ute for safety.
More saying, don't spend $20k on something with factory rust and no better safety than the old Jap ute .
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe, and from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip-malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moments lost in time; gone like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die.

i haven't read the whole thread.. but aren't they only doing commercial vehicles because the crash test requirements are different to passenger vehicles?

who needs legs, you've got two.. really a hot swap spare

People were paying $40k+ for factory rust on their new FG Falcons and VE Commodores. The Ozzie stuff still has it's crap points when it comes to quality.

Re the pricing strategy, you can't take the US prices as gospel. Australia is a highly profitable market for global corporations. We will remain that way in order to subsidise lower prices in other markets like the US.

2 of the blokes in my fishing club have purchased the single cab great wall 4x4 utes, both are 100% happy with them. They have low range and neither has experienced any dramas getting through some pretty boggy sand on Straddy & Fraser. No mechanical issues yet to speak of. Very basic, I sure wouldn't buy one if I planned on doing a lot of travelling in one, heck I wouldn't ever buy one. Would take a 10yo Toyota any day but surprisingly they aren't anywhere near as bad as I thought they would be.

all commericals have lower standards that passenger cars (excepting awesome stuff like Amaroks and the upcoming Hilux, BT50, Rangers etc.)

even very good stuff like the HYundai iLoad vans have less safety than the Kia Carnivals which are very similar

I know two people who have bought Great Walls as dailies. Both have had trouble free motoring but haven't been overwhelmed by their purchases.

problem is enthusiast like us won't buy them

people who just want A to B or tradies won't be impressed by the rust or outgassing plastics

it sets a very very low bar at not impressing anyone

not a good start but one would say a 1994 Excel or Daewoo Lanos was not a good start either
