Also this is a fact - using current technology if you can read something from 1 metre away you can read it from space.
I subscribe to Defense Technology International magazine. There are companies from which you can purchase sat time for surveillance. Depending on your security clearance level will determine the resolution feed you receive. It is written in one of the articles you can read text 10mm high with no problems, with much better capabilities reserved for defense only. Tracking vehicles over vast distances not an issue. Mayor customers are large transport companies who selectively video log their truck drivers, who are unaware, across Europe to reduce cargo theft and illegal transportation of drugs and people. Amazing stuff.

Edit: Just found the article. Not 10mm, newspaper headline text. What would that average? 30-40mm. Number plates no issue.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just claim the insurance on the thefts?

I think it is too gather video evidence to bust and arrest the parties involved, not every truck on every trip. Apparently it is rife and this what they had to resort too.

I've seen a full Rez image from what I was told was a military satellite at a job a long time ago in Canberra. The detail was staggering. Would love to see what they have now.

          Reading license plates was trivial.

The Hubble Telescope has a 2400mm lens but if focused on Earth the resolution is only 160mm,so still a bit of difficulty reading a Newspaper from Space.Could probably focus on some DD size boobs though.

Doubt Hubble could focus on earth we are pretty close to it.

                  This might prove interesting:

Can Hubble see the Apollo landing sites on the Moon?

No, Hubble cannot take photos of the Apollo landing sites.

An object on the Moon 4 meters (4.37 yards) across, viewed from HST, would be about 0.002 arcsec in size. The highest resolution instrument currently on HST is the Advanced Camera for Surveys at 0.03 arcsec. So anything we left on the Moon cannot be resolved in any HST image. It would just appear as a dot.

Here is a picture that Hubble took of the Moon:

                    Also:

Can Hubble take pictures of Earth?

The surface of the Earth is whizzing by as Hubble orbits, and the pointing system, designed to track the distant stars, cannot track an object on the Earth. The shortest exposure time on any of the Hubble instruments is 0.1 seconds, and in this time Hubble moves about 700 meters, or almost half a mile. So a picture Hubble took of Earth would be all streaks.

Well there ya go, that's a lot better than I thought it'd be.
Though reading a number plate on a car from a satellite is very hard to do, as they point down at a steep angle, too steep to read most plates. If you get at the right angle they have to look through a hell of a lot more atmosphere to do that, and that makes it far more difficult.
Sure it wasn't from a spy plane?

Resolution of a billion dollar spy satellite at around 300mm and now someone posts the Hubble at 2.5 billion dollars at an amazing but believable 160mm if you know it's build spec.

40mm?? - Sensationalist stuff without evidence or the need to provide evidence that sells magazines.

I'll look on my system, years ago I had a hi res picture taken from a real spy satellite not sure if I still have it or on a CD somewhere (probably because I remember it was massive in size).

Most trucking companies use live GPS tracking I thought (?) and I know it's law in some countries so why would they need or use hideously expensive satellite video tracking??

I reckon they are going to get piccys of all the Alien's buildings on the dark side as obviously GRAIL = Greater Research of Alien Installations on Lunar.

I have it on good authority that reading newsprint from an expendable low earth orbit , 75 miles, is 1980's technology. Apparently facial recognition was available back then as well.
