Pick a quiet station and you'll have no problem holding down a second job.
    HTH.

2 of my mates have been trying to get into fire fighting for 5 years without success. Both Electricians which would have to be handy as a fire fighter, both smart, both very fit and one of them is in the army reserve too. They sit the exams and do the physical tests every year and are still yet to make it in.
Randy De Puniet has had more crashes than any other rider in the history of Grand Prix motorcycle racing.

I did a 3 month work experience with them back when I was leaving school and trying to decide what to do - I was stationed in Beenleigh so got to see heaps of shit kickers who had fucked themselves up etc but all in all I found it really interesting and exciting but the lure of more money and not working shifts anymore (I had worked shift stuff all through high school and was over it). You've definitely got to love what you do to be a Para/Ambo - go try it before you buy I would say!

i would say do a EMT course like i did, will cost you a couple of thousand but will be an indication as to weather it really interests you..... i can needle, do IV-lines, ET tubes, basic stitching and a hand full of other cool stuff. basically all thats needed to keep someone living on a mine site accident in the middle of nowhere until the real help arrives...
I'm a qualified Anaesthetic Technician, did that for the last 5 years but got extremely jack of it and gave it away recently. Any chance of some more info on your qualification and what you do? Sounds a little more exciting and hands on, not to mention better paid :D Doing my job for a wardies pay is a joke and it's no shock the staff retention rate is similar.

Do you enjoy being assaulted and abused?

They should teach them Trev's Magna during their training. . .

A good friend of mine moved to the UK to train up as a Paramedic over there.

Normal shift work routine (ie, it sucks), spends the majority of his days waiting for a call, waiting at the ER to offload, or picking up old men/women who have fallen over and injured something.
He's been doing it for ~12 months now... i asked what his most exciting/interesting call was. It wasnt that exciting (so much so, ive forgotten what it was).

Im sure there are some good sides to the job (like the pay), but he didnt really elaborate.

im a geologist by career, but working in remote locations ive been part of mine-rescue teams where ever i go. its not my full time job, but we have to be trained enough to be first response on site and keep some one going till help arrives.

best example i can give is one site was 30min drive (at speed) to nearest "town" with air strip for flying doctors access, from the bottom of the pit to the office was 20min so potential existed to need to keep someone going for approx 1hr before advanced care.....

basically we all (depending on the team) have done the rookie QLD fire and rescue training - Road accident rescue, hazmat, fire, heights rescue as well as the medical stuff.

have treated everything from heat exposure to broken limbs to heart attach, and incidents from car roll overs to big 200tonne truck fires.... in some cases the mine is better equipped than the local fire/rescue crew so we got rolled out to all kinds to events in the local community.

when going in with a needle i always say "this is going to fucken hurt, im actually a geologist" it usually gets a laugh till the pain kicks in cos im actually a geo hahaha can always get a line in but usually i have to dig around a bit to find it (dont faint in front of me)

I know someone who did the uni course in Bathurst, passed all tests and graduated without a problem. Been 2 years since they graduated and still can't get a job.

Apparently you have to do some psych testing and that's done after uni.

This is also my career path next year, Sick of IT, been around the traps to many times, did my underwater film thing until I got bent to many times.

Want to give back to the community, and have a interesting job, Cops = no, Firey's not my style

My sister is an ambo and I think it would be a great rewarding job, but all jobs have shit moments,... Arranging a sit in real soon !

Hey Rorz that's not unusual in Adelaide to have many attempts before succeeding as a Firey. A mate of mine is a qualified plumber and it took ~ 8 years of applying, doing the physical testing, getting to stage 2 etc and then not quite making it before he got the job. He's shortish but super fit/strong, there is just a very long line of applicants for very few positions.

Almost all of them are tradies doing jobs in the down time.

Yeah, I can't believe these guys can't get it. Both have worked in the mines, both smart and both big fit cunts. Often go to the gym with them, I can't see them not being in the top 1-5% of applicants fitness/strength wise. I remember they saying there are thousands of applicants for a handful of positions though.

maybe they are dumb, do not pass the syc test or have have the right attitude .. fitness isnt the biggest thing, I was talking to a firey the other day, and asked what are they looking for.. his answer was "Non Anglo if what I see coming in is the current requirments"

Strange responce from him I thought.
