Boats are awesome, just get whatever you buy inspected by a proper marine mechanic before you hand over the cash, keep fresh fuel in them and get a full service done every year...

I wouldn't spend heaps first up. In a lot of cases people drop 50k on a boat and hardly use it, the bigger the boat the more a pain in the arse it is to use...

If i were you i'd look at something decent for say 15 to 20k. I think i paid $18,500 for mine 5 years ago and it's still worth around the same. It's a Haines Signature 492f - perfect for fishing, days out on the Harbour / Port Hacking etc with the family and you can ski behind it if you're into that. It's large enough to fish 12 mile offshore, but small enough (and light enough) that you can launch /retrieve it by yourself...

Decide what you want from a boat first, then look around. No point buying something that's a half cab if you "only" want a dedicated fishing boat - something like a centre console tinny would be better and have more deck room. By the same token they suck arse if you want to take family / friends out for a nice day on the water or drag someone around on a tube etc.

I chose mine because it's got a great hull (won boat of the year many times) and is the perfect all rounder. The cabin means overnight fishing trips to Lake Macquarie are a snack. I'm actually going to throw it in Sydney Harbour today, have a quick fish / swim at Chowder Bay then head over to Watsons Bay for lunch with the missus, her sister and my brother in law. Not a bad day for it actually...
The older i get, the better i was...

BTW - The boats Grunt posted look good - just don't even think about fishing offshore unless the weather is perfect. There's no way i'd be going far offshore in a bowrider, too easy to get swamped if there's a decent swell, the open front means you'll have a boat full of water real quick...

Huh $300 per hour? More like 400L per hour... Or $640 ...

I would get a sub 24ft with a 225-300hp merc optimax outboard on it, will use 100l fuel per day crusing around at 35mph or 200l flat out
          im a cunt

thanks for the invite Fatty - You come up, use my Lake and then fuck off! I will wave to you from the office today too... jerk.

Agree on the no bowrider off-shore bit - and moreso on the, if you are new to boats you shouldn't be going offshore for at least a season or 2, even in the most perfect conditions.

I have owned a Haines Hunter 540BR and a Sea Ray 1850BR in the last few years and the Alu hulls were best equipped for Harbour use, even if a little noisier/rougher. A also much more user friendly in terms of loading, coming ashore and managing when I was using them to pound skirt as a woman on a trailer is a bout as useful has pathamilton in a bank.

If I remember correctly Fatty you had a Haines Signature?

there rules are very different for trailers and towing, it also varies greatly by state. In some states you can tow 2 trailers so you'll see people with a caravan and then a boat on the back of the van.

Yeah, it's a Signature but only a little one though Grant - 492f, so 16.5 ft. I'm hanging to upgrade to a something like a 575f but nopics wants a new house so i'm banned from spending too much at the moment !

I'm a fan of tinnies too but yeah, they certainly do ride a bit rougher than the fibreglass hulls - i wanted something nice so went glass and love the ride in mine, it honestly feels like an 18 footer in a decent swell...

P.S - I thought you were down here full time ? We were up on the Lake a few weeks back for 4 nights. Oh, and don't bother waving today - the girls have just come home and decided they want to drive into the City instead so they can go shopping. Of course i'd already hooked the fucking boat up, they "didn't think" to ring to let us know. So we said they can go shopping on their own, we're going to play golf instead, then get on the cans and watch the cricket all arvo...
