I remember those Potvin front mount blower kits from the late 50s to the early 60s. Dean Moon was the official distributor of the Potvin blower system, and eventually bought Potvin Automotive. The Potvin kits were especially popular with the Boneville Salt Flat racers.Originally posted by RMX View PostFront mount blower!

stuff on Potvin Automotive here (it's an interesting read, especially the bit about his home made racing fuel using nitroglycerin extracted from dynamite and alcohol)James

I must admit this was a bit tame by my standards, But I was acutely aware of the number of guys carrying guns and I really didn't feel having a gun pulled on me for taking a photo of someones girl.Originally posted by nastypaul View Postyou've never been for a drink with this bloke have you.....

I will say this though, Even though there was enough small arms there to occupy a small country.. I saw no fights of signs or violence and the police/security presence appeared to be fairly low.Originally posted by MudkickerHow many blowjobs to pay off that debt?

Have always loved the idea of a front mounted blower. Notice how they're mostly on traditional rods and kustoms? Not really vehicles that go with the latest trends…Originally posted by nine2nine View PostIts a shame about all the flames ruining nice cars and panel work.
I hope they're not making their way back in.Originally posted by RVK 355Hold it flat cunt

No worries.Originally posted by ChrisS View PostHave always loved the idea of a front mounted blower. (BTW thanks for the links)
I saw the Potvin kits as pretty much a reinvention of the front mount supercharger installation on the Blower Bentley. They have advantages over the top mount rigs in aerodynamics, visibility, and the high-volume plenum chamber but also disadvantages like difficulty in over-driving them and the problems caused by that high-volume plenum chamber if the engine backfires. A front mount with intercoolers would be interesting though.
I love the classic rails of the early 60s, and the Mooneyes dragster with its Dragmaster chassis and Potvin blower is a wonderful snapshot of the era. The car could have had a Fire-Power Hemi, or a Buick Nail Head engine in it instead of a SBC, but it wouldn't have mattered as it would still be a classic car configuration of that particular time. Many of the rails that were originally fitted with Potvin (or similar) front mount installations were eventually converted to top mounts. If you hadn't tuliped the front mount blower case, then the blower case and internals could be reused without difficulty.
I'm showing my age here, but I remember the PA announcement at one of the Ampol Drag Racing events at Surfers Paradise in the mid 60s with the big news that one of the rails was fitted with one of the new "Elephant" Hemis. That event always remains in my memory as the the tipping point when the classic dragsters became a dying breed.
I have always had a fascination for multiple engine configurations and odd-ball cars. The twin tandem rail "Freight Train" started with a single front mount 6-71 feeding both engines ... quickly changed to the front mount 6-71 feeding the front engine only and a top mount 6-71 on the rear engine ... and shortly afterwards reconfiguring the front mount 6-71 into a top mount ... and that's how it stayed. The Dragmaster Two-Thing was interesting. Fitted with a pair of Potvn equipped, 5/8" stroker 283 Chevys mounted side by side (the right engine had the clutch and transmission, the left engine ran reverse rotation, and the engines were coupled together by meshing the ring gears on the flywheels).James
