People surprise me constantly in their choice of vehicles. How can these vehicles (ASX, Dualis etc) be classed as UTILITY vehicles if they can't hold anymore than a povo spec Corolla? And the power to weight renders them slower than a 22K Golf 1.2L TSI.
But as long as it looks "offroady" and has iPhone integration it's the best car ever built.
They're not classed as utility vehicles though. According to the RTA they are station wagons. As are people movers, ie Multivan, Tarago, Voyager etc.
Personally I find the Rav to be best cheap solution too our needs, I'd prefer a wagon but nopic's needs something with clearance/traction and we need something bigger then a Subaru, we did look at an Outback but found all the local ones over priced. Personally if we go for a wagon again we'll be looking at the Skoda Scout or Subaru Outback diesel.

Yep, agreed 100% ... these vehicles are supposed to be for people who don't want any sexytime, they've already got too many children or they don't want children, and hence getting an automotive device that removes all sexual desire is a brilliant solution.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
Didnt read whole thread but my sister ordered a dualis last year and after 6 months and constant dicking around about delivery etc she canned the order for a new santa fe.

Yeah there were definitely no issues in Japan last year that stopped car production.
Wonder whether there was a disproportionate amount of Mitsubishi 380s around Adelaide?
Well, if anyone in Adelaide can testify to having seen one once, we'd have to say "yes".

So,
Ive never really had anything to do with this 'market' however a few of my mates who have 1 or 2 kids seem to have these similar cars and Ive been looking into them a bit...not much though.
I wonder why would you go one of these 'soft roaders/wagon type' cars say over a wagon of a commodre/berlina, outback, etc
I can understand if you went the diesel models in the ix35, kia, etc but with the petrol models, most are a 2l to 2,5l 4 banger, as someone said eariler in the thread not much room than a corolla inside so how would it would with a family of 4 and all the gear?
this is where I would go a larger family wagon would be a pick if petrol?
or am I missing somerthing? (cost is a factor for sure!)
I got a 2008 AWD ST Manual for my missus, got it around 2 years ago (got it with 15000kms from a dealership).
All in all it's a decent car, did have a chance to use it in awd lock mode on the snow and was impressed. They are easy to drive and having the 6 speed is a good thing.
Things I like
- Very economical, averages 8.5L to 100km's mixed driving.
- Comfortable, easy to park
- Has been reliable
- Gearbox is reasonable and driveability is good.
Things I don't like
- Boot space is non existant, can fit shopping and very small pram and it's a tight fit.
- The handbrake lever is on the wrong side of the gearbox tunnel, so if you have 2 big drinks in the centre console you have to reach over these to grab the handbrake, knocking them over in the process = cunt. Clearly built for LHD in this department, fuckin russians.
- No ash tray at all, or any compartment to put your coins in.
- Not much guts on the freeway in 6th gear when doing 110kmh
You wouldn't buy one to get around Australia, but for small trips and 2 kids max, wifes shopping trips etc, they are good cars.

here's something funny
in the AU Cruze you get the same thing... two maxi size cup holders close to you and the handbrake on the left passenger side
in the US Cruze... two maxi size cup holders on the left and the handbrake on the right passenger side...
so what does that tell you? it says that the designers think two large supersizers are more important to the driver than the e-brake... either they're right and we're wrong... or vice versa

Even better now that you can get a Commodore wagon on gas that doesn't lose any boot space compared to the petrol model. So you can have all the space you want and fill your tank for $50.
(Serious question - can someone give me reasons why this would not be a winner? Seriously thinking this would suit my family's commuting needs perfectly).

Its called a handbrake mate.
