What does a new XR6T go for these days? A new SS has been $41,990 drive away consistently for some time now - you might want to add leather for another $2500 (IIRC) but the big Aussies are killer value these days.

I looked it up yesterday, after someone reckoned you could buy one for $40k.
NFI what the "real" cost would be, but RRP is ~$37k for the base Falcon, ~$40k for a G6, I think it was ~$42k for an XR6, ~$47k for a G6E or XR6T, and I think ~$55k for a G6ET.
A quick check on CarSales says you can get brand-spankers 2011's (ie. FG not FGII) for $40k drive-away if you want a slushtragic or $44k drive-away for a proper 'box ... that's without negotiation too.

... and the CarSales verdict on that says $47k drive-away for a 2012 (ie. VEII) sedan in slushtragic or manual, although it seems you're up to ~$55k if you want the wagon.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

"Latest offers" on Holden's website says $41,990 driveaway for an SS manual sedan, and that special keeps coming up every few months. Obviously an SSV, wagon, or Redline edition will end up being more. Holden also doesn't seem to discounts its wagons as much as its sedans.

            This.

I can understand a 4wd for convenience but they just don't do anything for me. A 4wd is a bigger compromise in terms of driveability and fun compared to the slight inconvenience of loading the little one in the back of a conventional car.

One question... Do the zf autos in the xr6 turbos have paddles to allow you to shift yourself? Assuming the SS have something similar...?

no paddels on ZF. Pop the shifter over to performance mode, then push forward or back. At least in the ford its the correct way, back for up.

I've done 11 full circuit days and 160,000kmg plus in mine.
Plus just took the wife and 2 kids/bikes for a weekend away. Room to spare and did I mention how good it looked with the black pod on the roof with matching dark tint and black wheels !

Performance isn't an issue. The way this small turbo spools up on E85 is quicker than alot of motorbikes I have ridden! Thread about mine here:

Nothing comes close for all round performance/space/price.

Essential mods are 4 pot Brembos. Really cheap if you look around, and change the wheels (of your preference) to fit Brembos at the front and a 9.5" rear on the back with decent tyres. I'm using 275 Michelin Supersports.

Stock suspension is crap, just like any car off the showroom in this price range. Plenty of options for springs or shocks from Bilstein/Koni. Biggest sway you can fit at the front is essential too. I went with custom made front Koni Coilovers with revalved internals.

                  Couldn't be happier.
No other car comes close for space/bang for your buck if you wish to modify.
Haters haven't driven one like mine man. I couldn't give a fuck about the bogan tag either!
Been to many track days that more than one FG blew up, seen a V8 explode the back of the engine, from what I understand the cam somehow moved back and shredded the rear of the head/block or something. Seen a few turbo 6 clutches and manual gearboxes let go.

But for a street car, I agree - nothing comes close, I've done no mods other than liquid LPG injection. I love the car, even though it already has interior rattles and the typical shitbox ford build quality, yet the engine and gearbox are just awesome, the whole package works properly and is enjoyable to drive.

I was one of the "Its just a ford, they're all the same" until I was talked into driving an FG. It's the first Falcon that's a completely different car. Sure, all Falcons from EA to BF drive and sound the same, the FG is new, improved and great.

If you've owned an FG XR6t and reckon they're boring, what similar sized car would you prefer that offers better bang for your buck and better feel as a daily?

                    thinking aloud for a moment...

is the Falcon the obvious choice because it has a large boot and you need a boot for associated peripherals that come with having a nopics + sproglets or is it just a desire to have 4 doors and RWD?

Just that my mate has two kids (3 and 5) and fits everything in the boot of a small corolla when he comes to melb from Ballarat, then his missus does the daily commute in it. I tend to think that people sprawl and fill space, ie if you have a car with a big boot, you end up lugging around heaps of stuff you never use.

cliffs: get the falcon anyway and do secret skids when nopics isn't looking.

Well we can fit stuff in the Corolla now...Just! it usually involves putting half the shopping in the back seat either side of the baby seat as the pram takes up the majority of the boot. We don't have one of those monster truck prams either, the nopics wouldn't be able to lift one of those.

So really its a case of needing more space, has to be 4 doors. Could probably get away with a Camry or some other boring car but thought I might be able to still enjoy myself a bit. FGs seem like a reasonable byplay for around $30k. Anything to look out for in particular? Might go check some out tomorrow.

Yeah guess a skoda is a left field option, but I previously had a mk vi GTI so it seems a bit of dejavu or a step backwards to me. I feel like embracing my inner bogan so I'll try an SS and a Xr6t and see what they are like first.

Job security could be a little iffy at the moment too so plans may be on hold due to douchebag narcissistic boss.

EA -> BFii XR6T is the same to drive but a FG is all new :knock: . Better go outside and drive the bosses G6ET yet again, after driving mine as I'm certainly missing something.
