for that price range, if it was my money, it'd be an AU+ falcon...
pros of falcon:
*Room behind seats to stick a fairly decent sized toolbox, which you won't get in a luxdeo type ute without getting a spacecab style one - which seem to be rare/expensive probably for this reason
*Room behind seats for car audio gear - if he decides that he's actually into cars, this will give him something to do/modify until he has his full license
*reasonably powerful (could also be a con)
*non-XR models will take a chep pallet between the wheel arches
*Factory gas AU or BA will perform reasonably well and have low running costs
*going to fordforums.com.au and typing in "funny noise from rear suspension", "warning light came on" or "stalling when i turn left on a tuesday" will have about a 70% success rate at identifying the problem (the other 30% of the time, you'll get told to clean your throttle body, change your PCV valve, get a K&N filter, some new sway bars, and fit an aftermarket tranny cooler, and if that doesn't fix it, go see a mechanic)
*drives more like a car than the others (and feels more like it too if you get an XLS with such decadent features as "carpet"), and on that basis will probably last him a long time (ie. before he feels like he needs an upgrade)
cons of falcon
*ABS was (and still is I think) an option on non-XR utes (my BFII has no abs) - so look for one that DOES have this
*reasonably powerful (could also be a pro)
*generally more "pretty" than hilux/rodeo utes, so he will probably be a bit more upset if it gets scratched etc
*can pull a fairly reasonable skid (could also be a pro)
*AU's and BA's are probably all getting to the age now where they need a new one of everything - ie. bushes/bearings/ball joints flogged out, probably a few seals, factory cat fucked etc. etc. - but at least you can actually get all of this stuff easilyOriginally posted by myshortyboombaI've had many gauges in cars. I always found the conrods react faster than a gauge.
you can always hear them when they break and they stop the engine immediately so you can't do any more damage.

Most of those cons are really pros if you think about it. No ABS is hardly a deal breaker, and for that price range I would expect a little roadworthy work, at least with the Falc its dirt cheap and easy.Envy is Ignorance, Imitation is Suicide - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hilux workmate 00-04 model. Should get change. You want the 2.7 litre motor.
Fucking lol at dickhead recommending a Proton Jumbuck :D

Probably get $500 for that canopy on ebay as I doubt he would want it. Would easily be able to beat the seller down to somewhere around 6k.

Another for 7k with only 100k on the clock.Originally posted by FatBoyTrump v Clinton is like cheering for the clap or genital warts. Either way it's gonna be ugly....

hey the proton jumbucks are good reliable cars. not really suited for tradie work (and the poor cunt would get teased something chronic) but being based on a nearly 25yo mitsubishi lancer, they have been developed to within an inch of their lives.
the kid is 17. he's going to be fucking hard on the car. falcons are good and cheap, but they arent bulletproof, and have quite a few real common issues, some expensive.
the hilux wont be as comfortable or as safe, but apart from putting fuel in it and service, nothing will ever need doing to it. and he wont wrap himself round a tree doing skids to impress his mates. trust me, im going to trade school with a fuckload of them, he WILL try to show off.Originally posted by Rdyno70ynu has to be the most retarded cunt here. um... a 17 year old will do nothing to a falcon that a cabbie doesn't. a falcon, although craptastic to drive compared to say, an E46 or an FD RX7, are miles, miles miles miles ahead of driving a hilux, as they're based on a passenger car, not a light truck. as for not spinning a hilux out and putting it into a tree, yeah right. sure they don't have as much power, but unloaded they're fkn deadly, especially in the wet.

Good point. Hilux is super light in the arse, and may catch out a novice driver in the wet. For learning I still say Falc beats all.Originally posted by Imposter Forg View Postum... a 17 year old will do nothing to a falcon that a cabbie doesn't. a falcon, although craptastic to drive compared to say, an E46 or an FD RX7, are miles, miles miles miles ahead of driving a hilux, as they're based on a passenger car, not a light truck. as for not spinning a hilux out and putting it into a tree, yeah right. sure they don't have as much power, but unloaded they're fkn deadly, especially in the wet.Envy is Ignorance, Imitation is Suicide - Ralph Waldo Emerson

yeah I'd recommend looking at insurance costs for young bloke driving a ute vs. young bloke driving a wagon - it might all be the same but it might not..Originally posted by myshortyboombaI've had many gauges in cars. I always found the conrods react faster than a gauge.
