"Mercedes-Benz is expected to announce its entry into V8 Supercar racing, Australia's most popular motorsports category. Source: Supplied
MERCEDES-Benz will enter the homegrown heartland of V8 Supercar racing next year to challenge Ford and Holden.
The luxury carmaker joins Nissan as a newcomer for a new era in local touring car racing, thanks to fresh regulations that open the way for additional manufacturers and lower-cost cars.
Details of the Mercedes' plan become public at 1pm today but have been an open secret in the V8 Supercar pitlane for weeks.
There has already been one official denial from Mercedes-Benz Australia, which had been against the project but has now given its approval after the scheme was green-lighted from company headquarters in Germany.
The plan will see a Benz-badged Car of the Future competing from 2013, wearing E-Class lookalike bodywork and using a V8 engine developed by Mercedes-Benz's high-performance AMG division.
Full details on the number of cars, sponsorship and team staffing will not be revealed until later today.
"We have nothing to say as this time. It will all be revealed during the press briefing," the spokesman for Mercedes-Benz Australia, David McCarthy, told News Limited.
But the project hinges on Erebus Racing and its wealthy chief, Betty Klimenko.
She has been fielding Mercedes SLS sports cars in the Australian GT championship for two seasons and decided to step up to V8 Supercar racing once the Car of the Future regulations, which have also tempted Nissan back to touring car racing with a V8-powered Altima run by Kelly Racing, became clear.
Insiders reveal that Erebus Racing used its existing contacts with AMG in Germany to commission the hardware for a V8 Supercar campaign, with a rumoured budget of more than $1 million.
It has also forged a link with Stone Brothers Racing, which is currently a Ford-backed team fielding four Falcons in this year's V8 Supercar championship.
But SBR's funding is up for renewal at the end of this year, with no certainty that cash-strapped For Australia - hit badly by the downturn in Falcon sales - will be prepared to extend the team's deal"
Engines to be built in Germany- this outsourcing scheme has never worked before in Aussie Touring Cars- was it Walkinshaw who ended up eggy after trying it with Holden V8's.
Won't the Nissans and Mercs just be slowed down to make sure the Holdens and Ford still win?
