I have a VE SS-V ute. It's actually not a bad thing. The old school horse and cart rear end has always put me off the Ford utes although I still wouldn't mind a BF F6 Tornado or FG XR6-T.
Randy De Puniet has had more crashes than any other rider in the history of Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
Despite building the Ute on the longer 3009mm version of the VE Commodore wheelbase, Holden has said the tray area on the VE is only fractionally larger than before despite a significant increase in the wheel-base, but says it is better-shaped. The Ute also has a lower payload capacity than before, as little as 508kg on some models. According to Holden's own guidelines, this 'maximum payload' capacity includes all non-standard items, including occupants.
Meh, I regularly put 2 x 200kg racebikes plus at least 100kg's of gear and 2 90kg occupants in mine without any dramas. It's also been lowered considerably on tein coilovers. Still handles really good fully loaded (or over loaded as the case may be). The reason the tray isn't longer from VZ to VE is that there is now room behind the seats to store backpacks etc in the cabin. VZ had literally no room at all behind the front seats which sucked ass (I had a VZ Maloo before the SS). It should also be noted that both the VZ and VE have larger (longer) trays than the Ford utes.

The payloads are lower these days mainly because of 18"/19" wheels. If you're worried about payload then throw some 16" steelies on and you'll be laughing.

Until something goes wrong and it's found you're over weight then you're well and truly fucked.
That said, you would be pretty bloody unlucky to be caught out.

i am a sucker for the ve, but i cant stretch for one currently.
and im not overly in love with the earlier models..... i do like em, but prefer the fords...

VE utes look out of proportion compared to the >VZs. And if you get one, get the V8.. Alloytechs have aids

do you care about it carrying lots of stuff legally, or just being able to do it?
xr6t with rear suspension modified a bit should be more than adequate... and don't buy a non turbo, the difference in fuel consumption is negligible for the extra fun you get in a turbo.. plus resale, plus LSD, etc. etc. etc.
and I reckon putting 1 tonne suspension in the back of an XR6T would be easier than putting an XR6T motor in the front of a one tonner
that said, if you want an NA one, you can't get a chep pallet inbetween teh wheel arches on an XR6, but you can on an XL/XLS, which may be a consideration depending on what type of stuff you're shifting. I believe the reason for this is because the XR6 needed more clearance for wider wheels. I suspect that this could be fixed by putting an XLS tub liner in an XR6 though - plenty of XLS' getting around with XR8 wheels on them...
The only mechanical difference between an NA XR6 and an XLS is the diff ratio (3.23 XLS, 3.45 XR6)

you can always hear them when they break and they stop the engine immediately so you can't do any more damage.

Yeah, I'd probably get a BF XR6-T/F6 over another VZ. VZ ute really struggles to get the power down and the manuals have real problems with axle tramp.

if i end up with a full bodied job, id be making a tray back at work anyways, ideally i would like the convinience of being able to fit full size "sheets" of stuff.... so 1200 by 2400?

Iirc XR6/XR8 wind up with a chep pallet wedged halfway down the wheel arches, as do some vans I've found.
BTW>600kg payload in a ute is shit, some wagons are rated higher, VN-VZ with HD suspension, Falcon wagons even my thing are all rated higher then that!
A jap 1 tonner would be a smarter bet, and cheaper in 4x2. Even an upspec extracab will shit on a falcadore ute for actual work especially where you are, clearence of the sporty falcadore utes is abit low for some use.
yes, but a current hilux V6/navara V6 2wd that isnt a pov pack is still quite comfortable, and rip good skids.
